what to use with a 2238b in a small room

specialidiot

Break Glass, Smoke Lucky
I'm close to finally getting around to painting and refitting my home office. It's a small 9x10 room with 8' ceilings and plaster walls.

I'll be feeding MP3s from my Mac via a dbx 3bx (to be acquired) and listening to FM.

I have Polk Mini-Monitors but those are serving fine duty in the kitchen, driven by a SX-450. They sound so nice down there I'd hate to break up that team.

I also have a pair of Polk 5jrs (with the PR) but I'm not in love with them, and they are a little large for the space.

Of course another set of mini's is possible.

But I'd like to hear what works and what doesn't.

Thanks everyone.

We have stacked Advents in a similar sized home office. Full size 25th anniversary edition Advents on the bottom, and slightly smaller 4002 speakers from 80-85 on top, inverted so the tweeters are centered. They do take up more space than SWMBO likes, but she likes the sound!

I run my Marantz 2238 with B&W DM 601s (series II). A small British bookshelf will sound great at all listening levels and, if bought used, will not set you back too much.

Boston Acoustic A60s are a good vintage option.

Somebody is going to suggest this product, so it may as well be me:here is one of several current threads:

Do a search on "Insignia" for alot more.

These Insignias seem to be getting alot of really positive commentary here at AK as a very good sounding speaker at a low price - I believe the term is "great value". I was persuaded to buy a pair when on sale, though haven't had a good opportunity to try 'em out yet. Based on what I've read, I have no doubt they'd work well with your Marantz.

I was going to suggest A-40s. Same tweeter, just not as much bass. However in an office, how much volume can you really use?

The other one that came to mind was a pair of Dynaco A10 speakers.

I have a 2252b in our Sitting Rm. (Mrs. Manning's name for a Living Room :D) It's a rather small room, about 12x12. I use B&W DM-110's. They are a small 2-way bookshelf speaker. The combination is quite nice. I'm sure you can find them at a very reasonable price too.

I'll second Urizen on the KLH Model 17s.

There is also a pair of Design Acoustics PS10s on ebay (no connection/relationship to me). Paul aka Delihaus and I seem to be the biggest AK fans of this downward-firing woofer/front firing tweeter/midrange speaker. They work well in small listening rooms like mine. I've got my PS10s being pushed by my Marantz 2240B and they sound sweet.

Let us know what you get!

Right now, I'm pretty enthralled by a pair of Genesis 1+, I listen to them while I am at my workbench, and every now and then, I just have to turn around and marvel at them.
Small Avents (2002, Prodigy) Small ARs (Teledyne era, of course) Small Infinitys, preferably with EMIT.
B&W DM 17, amazing soundstage.
There are more, but those are some I can think of off the top of my head that I liked.
