I realize that these tubes are electrically identical. The only difference is obviously one is a loctal base the other is an octal base, so a 7N7 will need an adapter. It seems like maybe the 7N7s are a bit cheaper but that might change over time. Anyway who is using the 7n7s and how do you like...

tnx. Knew there was one but was having a brain fart. There is a whole list somewhere of loctal equivalents of octal tubes. Most of them tend to be very cheap so its a good penny-pinch option. The sockets will cost more than the tubes to go in them.

You should be floating the filament supply anyway...
Often the cathode of the output tubes is used for this purpose on cathode biased amps, but you can make a voltage divider off the B+ and achieve the same results.
The filament supply needs some sort of reference to ground or you're going to have lots of noise.
