What was the the last audio-related item you purchased?

I had 3 CD players 'crash out' on me within 2 weeks' time, including my NAD. Like how in the world is that even possible?? So after that, I only played LPs for 3.5 months. It was great!!

So... 3.5 months later I 'just got lucky' & found a beautiful, in perfect shape, absolute M- cab, totally quiet, super smooth operating, used Sony CD player that audibly sounds really nice! Unreal really. Sounds better than my 2010 NAD I got in 2011 - noticed it immediately. It's a larger component-sized unit, black face - a perfect match to my gear. No remote - but no problem - I always play full albums. Back in the CD-playing business!!

I still need to get a quality new CD player - maybe in 8 months or so as long as this one 'holds up'. No reason why it wouldn't. I don't think this unit was hardly ever even used. It's just too fresh and operates 'too smooth' - it's perfect.

$7.99 at the GW. :)

Picked up some nice custom made speaker stands that are perfect for a set of Chase Pro10 speakers I have had sitting around for a few years. Paid $90 bucks for them. They are very well built and each column is full of sand so they weigh 70 pounds apiece. Check them out. :)

I bought an Audio Technica AT85EP phono cartridge for a Sony linear tracking turntable, PS-LX57, that was not working in exchange for cleaning up and getting a Sony a/v receiver going for a local thrift store owner here in town. I cleaned up all the gunk and used a small rubber band for the tonearm belt and got the mechanism working smoothly again. It came with an old Stanton cart with a D72E stylus which promptly broke when it touched an old test record. The player cleaned up very well and I just installed a new tonearm belt that I got for it. I'm very surprised at how well this unit plays and how good the cheap at85ep cart sounds! It will certainly be a bonus if the cartridge improves with burn in time! And, yes, who doesn't need a free nice turntable to play with and fix up?

Last Friday I grabbed a Danley Contrabass Serv-O-drive subwoofer with extra transformer and servo motor.

Got out of work early today, decided to check out a thrift I rarely ever go to. Bought a few CDs and a pair of Realistic Nova 15's. Not really great speakers, but they are in decent condition and the price was right. Will need foam, but I keep extra surrounds on hand. Should make good starter system speakers for the next person I know that's looking for a system. They're probably the first older, decent piece of audio gear I've seen in a thrift in awhile now.

Also, I boughtva new copy of AC/DC Back In The Black LP. My original hath b2en much aubused

Replace those shouty paper cone tweeters and they may sound decent.
Soft domes would help. Hopefully they have more than just a single cap going to the tweeter for a crossover. I was given a pair of Nova 4's that weren't listenable due to the thrill paper cone tweeter, plus the woofer ran full range. I put a pair of soft domes from another old beat up pair of realistic speakers along with the crossover since the crossover point was the same. They acually sound good now. Not great, but good and easy to listen to.

Thanks for the advice.

I actually have them hooked up right now just to test them out, the woofer surrounds are still intact enough to listen to them at low volume. I agree about the tweeters, they are very bright, bordering on harsh. I'm thinking about changing them out, and doing something better with the crossover, as they only have a first order on the tweeter, and also run the woofer full range. Some cabinet bracing couldn't hurt either, it's a fairly thin walled enclosure, seems to be about 1/2'' except for the baffle, which is 5/8''.

I got lucky and found the crossovers in the small Realistic speakers I had with bad woofers had a two way crossover with an inductor, resistor and the same value cap as the Nova4's. It worked out great using the domes from the small thrashed pair.
