Went to look at a CL advertised "custom japanese console" today

If you saw a picture of these speaker cabinets w/those dimensions, what would you guess might be driving them? Would you drive an hour to have a peek at them?

The young man selling the console had "bought" it from the original owner of the house that he bought three years ago. The widow's husband had been stationed in Japan circa 1963 and had brought it from there.

There was no turntable, amp, receiver, reel to reel or any other gear except the two speaker drivers and.... a Garrard Headshell.

.... and the speakers were -- 12 inch Round Red Alnico Magnet foam (rotted) surround Wharfedales.

As much as I like wharfedales, and I know foam surround 12" Round Red magnet Wharfedales are not that common, I just don't have room for another piece of furniture.

When I saw the general shape of the cutout of the wood behind the speaker grills, and the overall dimensions of the speakers, I was thinking... 15" Altec, E-V, RCA, something.

I had to thank the guy for showing them to me, and no I didn't offer him something for the drivers only. Hopefully someone will need some very large speaker boxes with some better than average 12" wharfedales in need of refoaming.

There is minor damage to the entertainment center from being old and used.
The dimensions are:
speaker boxes 38"H x 19.5" D x 21.75"W
center unit 38"T x 19.5"D x 37.5"W

Yep, Thats exactly what they are. Karlson cabinets. And they looked to be a pretty solid build of them too.

And this graphic that I found in another AK post even calls out the 12" Wharfedales.

I want a set of Karlson speakers. I don't even care if they sound good, they're just way too sexy looking. I want the kind with the wood on the front in that "Eiffel Tower" shape though.

The young man told me he gave $125 for the whole shooting match and was willing to sell it / them to me for $100. Like I said, it was just too much furniture for me, and I didn't realize they were Karlson Cabinets, or I might have tried to buy just the speakers and shoehorn them into the back seat of my Toyota Corolla.

A lot of the Karslon cabinets had really high end rivers in them. I would drive that far

If they are 15", then they are probably coaxials or maybe even triaxials. With those Karlson cabinets they are highly collectible. Worth pursuing.
