Whatever you do, don't count those records!

Yeah, I think it comes back to what everyone seems to be touching on in this thread, is how much room you have. I used up all the available space I had and wasn't about to stop collecting and with about nine years of focusing on jazz, all of the artists and albums I loved immensely, I wanted to focus going forward on the pop, rock and blues genres I've grown up with, so I had to make a sacrifice! Since I made very good choices regarding the jazz reissues I chose to collect and the condition in which I keep everything the purchaser didn't hesitate to make up his mind when he realized what he was presented with and made a very generous cash offer the next evening after I emailed him my spreadsheet. So, in lieu of the outcome and the new music I've been collecting, I have no regrets for parting with my jazz records. Actually, some of the titles I sold are coming back into the fold such as some of the Coltrane and Mingus, up to this point because I took some of the proceeds and purchased a low numbered subscription to the Analog Productions Atlantic 75 Series which includes some of the titles by the afore mentioned artists and of the ones I've received they are definitely an improvement over the copies I purchased as reissues. Not that their predecessors were poor quality since they were from the likes of Speakers Corner, Analog Productions etc., but the 75s have been handled with the utmost care and you can hear it! I've also been very happy to discover that many of the available reissues of popular artists like Tom Petty, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello and others that you can purchase at local record stores and online have been handled very well, using quality sources and prominent mastering engineers cutting the lacquers, not to mention the outstanding quality of the pressings, packaging and the gorgeous sound. Awesome!
No, I understand that. For me it's really all about variety, so the idea of just a few favorites on high quality pressings, is far less compelling to me than a bigger library. Still, I get he whole running out of space thing too and it seems that if you ever get a jones for lots of the kinds of recordings that you sold, you can always get some kind of streaming thing set up, if you don't have one already. A friend of mine who easily has the very best audio system of anyone I know, has a big CD collection and a very small collection of LPs, but lately has converted mostly to streaming media... and he seems to be more than happy with the sound quality.

I don't! I just look to see how much shelf space I have left. Close to 8 feet as a best guess at the moment in 4 different cabinets for Lp's. I am out of CD space at the moent and only have about 30 inches for Blu-rays. I have been using thin line CD and DVD cases for years, other wise, I would have run out of space years ago. But there is hope!

I certainly like the CDs that come in thinner cases, like those paper LP type sleeves. Unfortunately, I don't like the idea of porting everything over to those thin-line cases because all of the artwork doesn't fit in those things. What I really hate are those older style double CD boxes that are the width of 3 CDs! The newer style double CD boxes, that are the width of just one regular CD case, are pretty delicate and it can be a bit difficult to pull the booklet in and out of them, but I'm happy to deal with all of those issues just to have something that takes up less space...

I have a desk top paper cutter that I use trip just a bit of the edges in the vertical and then they fit the thin cases just fine. Its the DVD's that are the real pain in the neck to make the front with back label fit.

The problem with buying music on iTunes is that you don't get the liner notes. Only the list of selections and the front cover art work.

I got my LPs down to 650 or so. That's a good working number for me. Could go down to 600 but that would be getting rid of M- LPs I'd like to keep. I guess. 650 may be the bottom line.

I'd like to get the 1000 CDs down to 750 to 775 ... but that may prove to be difficult. Got to figure that one out. I mean, I don't even listen to 80% of them but I've heard each one so many times they are like 'old friends'. And I have 150 each of M- 50s/60s jazz that would really be hard to part with as well as the selected M- 70s/80s classic rock albums.

600 LPs / 700 CDs would be good. It's a goal anyway. a number to shoot for. Will it ever happen? I don't know. :dunno:

And then... there are the 200 cassettes I kept in 2 wooden Napa wall racks. Gave away 300+ of the cassettes a long time ago. Kept the 'special' for whatever reason ones. And the show box of rare cassettes.

:dunno:

I have about 600 CD's of which most aren't displayed anywhere in my listening room because they're all ripped by my Bluesound Vault 2 and stored on its internal hard drive.

In my listening room I do have about 630 records, a mix of thin single records from the '70's - '90's (and recent), gatefold double LP's, and about 10 of the MoFi Ultradisc One-Step records in the thick black boxes. I'm just at the point now where the two racks my son made from the plans here are so full that I can no longer flip through them and easily see the covers. I have asked him to make me a 3rd, but that'll be my limit. I'm approaching retirement, so purchases will slow and that's OK. Right now there's only a small handful of records that I probably won't play, but NONE that I have never played.

My lovely bride could count my records anytime she wants, I don't mind. She doesn't care how many, doesn't play them, and can see by looking at the BluOS app how many CD's are here somewhere. It's not her concern, though I got nothing to hide. My goal will be to get up to around 750-800, but it definitely NOT about the quantity. It's about do I have easy access to them and are they all records I'll play?

Picture of the two full racks, and a picture of the spot under the old portrait of my late maternal grandfather (a WW1 vet w/ 22nd Engineers Div serving in France.)

Well I found some book ends and now I have space for 80 more cd's in standard Jewell cases. But it will be a mix for sure of standard and thin. I also ordered some more book ends from Amazon, so when they arrive I will have room for another 160 plus CD's. That ought to last me another few years or so. Unless I go on a buying spree. At a dollar each I just might do that.
