What's so special about these 1963 12" RCA drivers?

I briefly touched upon this in the thrift store finds thread, but figured I'd do better to ask properly.

I got a pair of these, last week. Imagine my surprise when I researched them and found an ebay listing where a pair sold for $285! Same part # and everything.

My question is, why? What's so special about these that they sell for that kind of money?

Here's a link to the ebay listing.

I do not know, but if I had to guess it would be that they appear to be full-range drivers.

However, I'm rather surprised at the selling price myself. I see what appears to be identical items with one day left, a 99 cent opening bid, and no bids at all. Go figure.

Perhaps someone else here has a better answer. That's all I got.

Either PT Barnum comes to mind, or maybe the tube guys like them. They were in nice shape. But, I wouldn't pay that much for them. I am too cheap to pay $6 for a beer at the hockey game.

And no watchers at all according to watcheditem. That one could go under the radar. The shipping is rather high though, maybe that's what's driven people onward. There's also a single with a BIN of $39.

I can only think the other auction at $285 was a pissing contest. They did look pretty though.
