Whats the most dissapointing speaker you've ever heard?

My brother's big ol' circa '74 CVs -- no longer recall the model name/number -- sucked big time and in every room.

Polk RTA15tl
However I would like to hear them with all the modifications that purportedly save them:dunno:
They are a whole different speaker when modified. Complete seperation beteeen the highs and lows. Bass not boomy but exteneded and a 3 dimension sound that envelops you in. They play with authority for sure. Mine are a fixture after owning classic B&W and kef speakers

Another disappointed in late model Polk. They have the drivers and solid cabinets to sound good. They look great and have plenty of showroom appeal. IME, they sound bright and boomy at the same time. Now that I'm thinking about this, older Polk like my SDA2 sound like that. Must be a brand sound. And yet, Polk is a survivor and continues to thrive.

Most disappointing for me recently is a pair of Advent Legacy II's. Picked them up a couple weeks ago because I heard so many good things about them. Their highs give me a headache everytime I listen to them. I've tried turning the treble down on my receiver and the bass up a bit which helps a little but for the most expensive speaker I ever bought, I'm kinda bummed out. Gonna see if I can move them along and get my money back out of them. Driving them with a Pioneer SX D-7000 and they don't play well together.
Listening to a pair right now. Must be a synergy thing.

Have you checked the tightness of the four inner screws on the tweeter? Maybe a recap is in order.

When it comes to small speakers, KLH Model Twenty. The 22 and 23 are both much more impressive speakers (one larger, one smaller than the 20), but the Twenty is just so popular for some reason.

Large speakers, Klipschorns. I was blown away when I got them as they were my first set of horns, but they quickly started to kill my ears on the mids/highs. Recapping them made a huge difference in the bass section, but still not enough to save them from being sold when I got a set of JBLs recently. The JBLs just come off as much more musical, natural, and detailed than the KHorns, even at lower volumes.

Well I can tell you this , vandersteens have exceptional bass and with lots of low end extension with the right gear and they also do very good with rock . Now I am talking about 2ce signatures 3a’s Quatros and 5a’s that I have personally heard with the right gear . But I have found that a lot of the times people give up on vandersteens because they hear them with one setup and take it as that’s just how they are , I was almost guilty of the same thing but something told me to keep trying , long story short I’m glad I did . But like I said before with the right gear and most importantly set up correctly vandersteens are a force to be reckoned with .

I believe I am comparing the Vandies to two sets of Cerwin Vegas 317p and DX9s running simultaneously in different setups for different music or more specifically different levels of listening maybe .I dig the Vandersteens enough to never put them in a catagory of a disappointing speaker but they don't move the air like the CVs.I have recently suffered some hearing loss in one ear and have found I really like the dynamics of certain CV speakers, rock speakers, not audiophile and all that bs be damned.Just different setups for different moods, music, levels of listening and all all that jazz. The RXZ9` Vandesteen setup is not going anywhere but I use it for a whole different type of listening experience for the most part but not all.

That’s fair and your right vandersteens aren’t party speakers although there bass does dig very deep but accurate. I have found after I have matched my vandys with all the right equipment they do far more music right than wrong .

I have yet to check the tweeter or anything else on them yet, not sure if I will do that or recap. I picked up a NAD 7045 receiver today while yard saleing and the Advents sound pretty good with the NAD, must be a synergy thing. I'll give the Advents another good run tomorrow and see if I still dislike them or not
