What's with Farewell Tours?

I hear that Cher collapsed during a Vegas performance recently. I remember her in a huge production 8-9 years ago called her "Farewell Tour" which was recorded and shown on cable, etc. Do some of these recording artists know what "Farewell" means? (I call her a recording artist because it painful categorizing her as a musician.) Are these Farewell Tours a gimmick to rake in money? Ozzy Osbourne had a farewell tour in the early 90's then realized that he hated retirement and vowed to tour as long as he could. I think Cream's last reunion was dubbed a farewell?

"Gimmick to rake in money..." Bingo, buddy. The idea of a 64-year-old woman trying to be a Dark, Exotic Temptress is somewhat nauseating...Unless, maybe, you're a horny 75 yr old...

How many has Pete Townshend done with the remnants of the Who? :-(

Hope I die before I get old... Pete's a pretty smart guy; I'll bet he knew he'd regret publishing that lyric when he wrote it.

I don't know but I saw their "Farewell" tour back in 1982.

IIRC, that one or maybe a slightly later one was promoted around here as "The Who's First Farewell Tour". Maybe Pete saw this trend coming.

I think every time I've seen Doc Watson since his son Merle died in 1985 was rumored to be his farewell tour. At least Doc didn't market them that way (that I know of).
