Their first three albums (before Steve Perry) were VERY influenced by Neil's time with Santana. Here's a concert that I saw in 1974, I was 15. Winterland Arena in San Francisco was a great place. Someone saved the video they shot during the shows.

This is Journey before they became a pop band.

Thats the Journey I liked, and saw them with Dunbar way back when, pre Perry, after the 3rd album(Next) it was apparent they were destined to become the Steve Perry back up band. Hence Aynsley Dunbar and later Gregg Rolie leaving the poprock version of the band.
 
I saw them pre-Perry at Winterland and at San Jose Auditorium (Civic?). Great stuff. I saw the Abraxas Pool at the Fillmore when they did a tour. Got the cd... somewhere lol

Winterland is still the best place I've been for concerts. I'm sure part of that is basically growing up there, and the great bands of the 70's that I saw there.
 
Never saw them with or without Perry, but I do love the pre-Perry stuff. The Perry stuff does nothing for me......

Sorry...I Stopped Believing after he joined the band! :)

Agreed.
Winterland was a real shithole for a venue, but it really had soul too. Beats any stadium though most other places do. :smoke:

I saw the Stones at Rich Stadium in Buffalo in 1978, opening for the were April Wine, The Atlanta Rhythm Section & Journey. Boy was I bummed when they did a 2 minute version of Kohoutek and then brought out this singer. When did Journey get a lead singer??? Good for them they went on to be huge, but not my cup of tea.

Loved the 1st Journey album, especially Of A Lifetime.... Used to hear that in
a local bar and had to go get the LP. Great stuff. The Perry version lost me.
I saw the VH1 'Behind The Music' bit on them and wow - what a tool Perry
was. Had them throw out original band members so he could be the star...and
then wondered what happened when they finally had enough of his star antics
and bagged his ass. What a shame - that original band had some serious
chops and they let it go for the almighty buck. Now, they're an 'oldies' band
doing the multi-group arena tours.... That 1st LP is worth digging up for the
uninitiated - great stuff.
