So I saw this for parts or repair AU-317 pop up on eBay with rack handles for a good price. I thought, well, sometimes I need a preamp when testing power amps, so what the heck. Local pick up so I did not have to pay for shipping.

Seller advertised that they tried to connect it and thought they blew a fuse, but did not check.

Got it home, opened it up, and checked all fuses and output transistors. All ok.
Fired it up on full power (no dim bulb) and a few seconds later……”click”.

Checked DC at speaker terminals. 14mv and 15mv.

Hooked up some test speakers and a CD player, and what do you know, it works. Now, the source/tape switch was on tape. Me thinks this is why the seller thought it wasn’t working.

The controls were super dirty, so I cleaned them.

OK, the other reason I wanted it, was to compare it to the AU-222 I recently bought.

So I guess I needed it.

That looks clean, too. Nice. I've had one under my bench for over a year that needs attention. It keeps getting pushed to the back of the line - right now by a 222. If my 217 is any indication, the 317 is a great amp.
 
Well, at this time the AU-222 sounds much better than the AU-317. But, the 317 has issues. A hum and buzz in both channels. Pulled the main caps and they are fine. Pulled a couple other caps that were covered in corrosive glue, and one had a lead corroded off. Looks like glue and maybe it leaked. I am certain this is the culprit.

I will order parts for a rebuild and compare the two again after.

After working on quite a few Sansui amps and encountering the dreaded fuse resistors on many of them, I thought it might be worthwhile to post up some information on where they are in various amps and receivers, what symptoms are typically present when these go faulty, and what to do about replacements.

Contributions are welcomed from other AK'ers, and I will index these in this first post.

Starting at the end.... it has been well documented by others here that the typical 1/4W fuse resistor used by Sansui in many of their amps and receivers can be replaced by either good quality...

Replacements for the fusible resistors were included in my order for parts.

The glue turning corrosive is the biggest issue with this one.

The original main filter caps are 5 pin, and so are the Kemet caps I ordered. Hopefully they drop right in. Same diameter.

I had a 217 in my bedroom system. Then we got a 222. It so stayed. We’ll put the 217 back when the 222 moves to the living room. We’re selling our Model 8 to make room for it.

I used to work on Sansui's. On some models this was pretty common. The glue was applied so liberally it was in contact with the component leads. Over time it does eat right through the leads as your photo shows.

the 317 is a nice amp.

As I remember them - both the AU-317 & AU-317II have 4-Pin Main filter cap's: eg. Kemet 12,000uF 63V
...and congrats on a near Mint AU-317 - love these little power-house's and with Rack-handles too - Nice!

Ha ha. You are correct. And I had one right in front of me. 4 pin.

I was hoping the 15,000uF 100v Kemet caps I have here, that Mouser sent me by mistake once upon a time, would fit. They are also 4 pin, but are a smidge too wide.
