Where are the GOOD GW finds??

I think it is all about timing. Anything worthwhile lasts about 10 minutes on the shelf at a couple of the GW's around here. They must get a thousand customers a day. You could literally visit a store 5 times a day and still miss out on that one piece of gear when it shows up.

That said, I've managed some great scores.

I normally bring stuff to GW, and for a while thought there was nothing worth getting. But every so often nice stuff creeps in. In the last few weeks I picked up a couple of Sansuis (a 5050, an A-770 and an 881) for $50 total. And they seem to get a steady supply of new LPs. Nothing overwhelming, but enough to keep me coming back.

All I have in my area is SA, and all they ever have is answering machines and broken boomboxes. The LPs are tossed on the floor in a pile, half of them without jackets. I don't even waste my time anymore.

I found a working Silver

JVC tapedeck for $10.00
A Newer Black Kenwood tapedeck for $2.00 (saint vincent de paul)
A pair of RCA bookshelf speakers for $6.50
A Pair of Single Driver soundesign tower speakers (Dont laugh) I never knew that a % inch driver could have so much Bass! Must have been the box size!
I used to have a pair of Very Bassy ported Yorx bookshelf speakers which contained a simple "4" driver!

At my local Saint vincent I found a soundesign recever with built in cassette deck and original speakers for $6.00. I never knew that 45 watts could be so Loud.! I'm still struggling to get all the Nicotine off of it though!

I bought a JVC double cassette deck for $2.00 and it works great! I bought a Bryan Adams tape along With it!

I also Found a Complete All in one Soundesign Rack stero with TT at a consignment shop for 40 bucks I quickly carted it out of the door took it home set it up and Decided that this little Stereo Is NEVER leaving My custody I'm starting to buy vinyl and cassette tapes as a result!
It sounds So Warm! and It also smells good and the Stylus is brand New!

I found an emerson stereo (no speakers) with built in dual cassettwe decks which need new belts in each and a Cd player that works perfectly!

I bought a realistic 12 band EQ for $2.00
I also bought a tecninics EQ tor $3.00
I bougt a sony discman for a dollar! it works great!
I also got 2 Soundesign speakers at the corner shop for ten dollars (nice bass for bookshelf speakers) but they suffer from baffle ring on certain soungs!

I also got a MARANTZ SUPERSCOPE receiver for $5.00 (sounds great) Model R-1220!

Almost always 80s/90s plastic crap in Portland, Or's GW's. And the pricing is usually not that great either. Only stuff I've seen in past year was an early 80s low watt silver Kenwood for $40 in the large store by Grand and a pretty beat looking Dual TT at the Broadway store. There's a pair of 70s Kenwood floor speakers (or there was last nite)in the N Portland store on Lombard. Wooden grill is broken on one of them and they're asking $40. Maybe the decent stuff gets snatched right away? I've had better luck at estates and yard sales.

Much is now diverted to online auction, and the flea market people, around here and many other places, have organized 'coverage' of the Goodwill outlets. There are people who get a few bucks to hang around the Goodwill all day, put anything possibly good in a cart as soon as it comes out, and the principal either comes when called or at the end of the day and buys what he wants of it.

This was not happening, as far as I know, in 2007....

Here in Torrington,CT,there is a GW and a SA,and I make it a point to hit both every saturday morning.Occasionally,I'll find something decent. The last few finds included a pair of Bose 301 series III near mint,a pair of pioneer cs 77a's,and last sunday I found an AR XA tt,in decent shape. It cost me $20.
