Just spent days trying to find resources for a detailed evaluation/recap/rebuild of some very persnickety power amplifiers. Gobs of Marantz bench experts but SAE, not one was found. No mention of GAS or SUMO either.

Do any of you guys know any deep bench guys that understand these amps and what to/to not do to these. Please chime in if you have ideas. My wonderful little amps are now 40 to 50 years old and they NEED HELP!

SAE is a problem. Up until a decade ago, there was an active SAE user group, but since that time, the key people have died or moved on and the important online resources that were once there are now nearly gone. Wardsweb is the only remaining resource that I can find, and he does have a few schematics of a few amps.

Of course, @Wardsweb is a well-known member here, and perhaps we can coax him to provide more information.

As to service providers, well, any competent tech can probably deal with the obvious things on an old SAE amp, simply because they aren't that complicated and the problems are usually easy to figure out. I would not define SAE amps as being persnickety.

Many thanks for pointing me back to "Wardsweb" to find great information under my nose! I have been there several times but had never noticed the stealth links at the top of page. Really can use that info.

I said 'persnickety' because I remember 50 years ago that our in-house repairman attempted repair on two SAE power amps. He used his go to parts that were fine on all the other brands that we carried but they went into oscillation and burnt more than he could fix so they had to go back to SAE.

I have not used him, but Jim Bongiorno referred to Mike Zuccaro-The Audiocraftsman:http://audiocraftsman.com/. Jim complemented Mike and referred people to him. Also, I believe Mark Wilson http://absoundlabs.com/. Jim referred people to him too, and Mike Bettinger https://bettingeraudiodesign.com/ is another Jim referred people to. Bettinger I believe specializes in Gas Audio. http://www.wardsweb.org/ designed Jim Bongiorno’s website when it was up, so if he responds, he will have additional information to add. Good luck!
 
I have had Mark Wilson restore many GAS, Sumo and SAE unites over the years. Knows his stuff and has a lot of the schematics and handwritten factory notes from James B.
