Where does Concept 16.5 stand when it comes to other big power receivers?

For those of you who had or have the Concept 16.5 and had a chance to compare it with other big monster receivers, such as G 9000 and Sx 1250, where does this unit stand? And all other ss units in its power class.

Thanks for your input everyone.

You may want to check out some of the previous Concept 16.5 or best big receiver threads.

IMHO, with two 16.5's in the stable, they are very solid, stable and reliable. Audibly, at 165 wpc at 8 ohms, the 16.5 was the TOTL of the Concept line and, except for ultimate power like the Marantz 2500/2600, Pioneer SX1250/1850 and the like, holds its own against most other recievers.

Most of us Concept owners comment on how the recievers seem quite effortless in their audio reproduction and the sound is pretty neutral and clean.

I'm sure others will chime in over time.

Hi, I own both a Concept 16.5 and a Pioneer SX-1250 as well as a SX-1050 two SX939;s a SX-880 and a Concept 5.5 The Concept 16.5 was the top of the line and the most powerful receiver ever offered by a house brand in this case Pacific Sterio. (sub. of C.B.S.) it is a dual mono block receiver so each channel has it's own power source. no bleeding over from one channel to the next. It has a very clean sound and when paired to a pair of Pioneer HPM-1500 as mine is it will make a grown man cry and your neighbors either love or really hate you. It is considered by some as one of the finest receivers ever made by anyone at any time. Take my word it will not only stand up to my Pioneer SX-1250 (they set side by side on my rack) it will kick it's ass in the bass department and I do love my 1250. You can't go wrong with this receiver unless you would rather spend a hell of a lot more money.

Good luck

Darrell

The 16.5 can properly drive my Yamaha NS-1000M's and that is saying a lot. The 16.5 has dual transformers and has one of the highest 4 ohm ratings relative to the 8 ohm rating. (165 watts / 250 respectively.)

Dang it all, you guys. I'm trying to SHRINK my receiver collection, NOT add another to the "must still get one" list! :sigh:

Actually, I've never heard a 16.5, so I can't answer your question, but it has been widely praised for years around here by people who've owned a lot of receivers (as in darrellsharp's post above), so it must be pretty good!

the 16.5 is a very impressive receiver, one day i will get around to recapping it completely and again comparing it to my 1250. as of right now as good as it is the 1250 stands head and shoulders above it. the 1250 is without a doubt the finest receiver i have ever heard. now for the record mine is completely restored with the finest caps and trannies available (original outputs) so it could be an unfair comparison since the 16.5 is original as far as i cant tell..

Bart: between Chris, Bigears, and myself, we've heard almost all of the TOTL monsters and the 16.5 easily rates in the top five for sound. I still own the 2500, 2600, CR-3020, R-117, STR-GX10ES, RX-1603, and used to own many others. The 16.5 has them covered, IMO.
