Are these not the "true" 7591's but a modified 6L6?
IMHO, If I can recall (possibly with error) where these the "FIRST" 7591 replacement tubes (new production) that uses 6L6 internal parts and where based as a 7591?
I think that you needed to modify your amplifier somewhat to use these tubes and where NOT a direct "plug-and-play" arrangement?
I think later tubes NOT MARKED "XYZ" where a better working arrangement that worked better as a plug in replacement.
If the amp. you are using these in HAS had the necessary mods. to use these tubes, than YES you need the exact replacements that are in the amp. now (OR remove any mods. used for this tube and use later 7591 versions available). :scratch2:

You are correct...they came with a resistor that had to be added to the circuit to accommodate them. There's a quad of RCA on ebay right now for not a whole lot....

You are correct on what the 7591XYZ is, however it so happens its a perfect match for a 7355 that comes in the HK amp he's looking at. The 7355 is basically a 5881 (6L6 family tube) based almost the same as the 7591. Someone on here did make an HK amp run a real 7591, but I seem to remember he had a lot of trouble getting it to behave.
The thing with the HK is either you find the proper 7355 tubes or re-wire the sockets to take a 5881. I own one 7355 amp and I was able to score a sleeve of NOS GE tubes for a very reasonable price. I couldn't have purchased new production tubes plus spent the time to re-wire the sockets for what I paid for them. Mine also happens to put the tubes pretty close to one another, and I wasn't super comfortable with the spacing on the fatter bottle tubes. I think the HK amps have a little more room in that regard.
I'm a little surprised nobody makes a 7355 now. It wouldn't take much, just re-base a 6L6 family tube and you're good to go. I guess not enough amps ran them for anyone to care about it though. The replacement tube market seems largely driven by what guitar amps use and I have no idea if anyone made 7355 guitar amps. Doesn't seem a great number of hifi amps used them either.

Seriously. In fact, if New Sensor wanted to, they could just disconnect the pin 4 connection on the 7591XYZ and label it as "7355". It'd be a slam dunk.
Or, even better- re-base the new-production Tung-Sol 5881. That would be a "true" 7355 in every way that matters, including total height (the 7591XYZ is taller than a stock 7355, but the TS 5881 is not).
That said- there are 7355s out there, here and there. They're still not terribly expensive. And when they go away, just re-wire the tube sockets and install 5881s...
