I did the USB key thing off Amazon a while back. I know there were some problems reported with those, but mine did the job and was pretty current on the build so no day or so of updates to have to wade thru.
PS ... still waiting for an offline service pack though. Auto update works, but having to reload from an old key and then run a billion patches sucks big time. Most "migration" utilities suffer severe suckage and can be a real carp shoot.

You do NOT need a Microsoft account to upgrade to Windows 10 using the media creation tool. Microsoft tries hard to push people into using/creating a Microsoft account but it is not required. You can make it easier by disconnecting your computer from the internet during the upgrade. Either use the media creation tool to create an ISO first, and install from that while offline, or use the tool itself to do a direct upgrade and unplug your internet after the download is complete.
During the upgrade it will pester you to connect to the internet, but there will be an option in the lower-left that says something like "I don't have internet", click that. Then I believe you will get one more screen pestering you about the "benefits" of using an online Microsoft account, but you can skip that also, and then you're good to go.
All of my computers have been upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8 using the Media Creation Tool, some recently, and not a single one uses an online Microsoft account.

Yeah, if you're going to pay for the license, get the disc or usb. They can be pretty handy if you later end up in a no-boot situation. Like skizo said, careful with what you buy if you're getting it from Amazon. It seems there are several scams there where you get a code that has already been used. Last W10 I bought I got from B&H Photo and of course, no problems.

I had no problem downloading Windows 10 for free following the directions given, but the download take some time. You must have a licensed and activated copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro for the download to work.

Use the media creation tool, legit and free, use your Win7 license when installing, it will auto install home or pro version based on the version your Win7 key is for.
Also, while doing the initial setup after installation just disconnect from the internet and keep clicking the no internet options and it will set up a local account instead of a Microsoft account. You can always add a Microsoft account later in settings.

Thanks. I didn't think of that. I did get one from Amazon, sold by Amazon, and it worked perfectly. The MS store is probably even a safer bet.
