Perusing the Bargain Bins
Hi folks,
I have a Sherwood S-1000II mono amplifier that I am re-tubing. It calls for four 6BQ5/EL84 power tubes. I've been trying to research different new and NOS brands, but most of the reviewers talk about how the tubes break-up in guitar amplifiers. I need to know which are best for a warm sound in a hi-fi amplifier. Any thoughts and/or recommendations?
I know NOS Mullard, Telefunken and Siemens tubes are highly regarded. But they are also too highly priced for my meager means.
I've read that the NOS Russian military 6P14P-EV tubes would work well. But do I get the ones made in in the 1980's at the Reflektor plant or the new ones being made by Sovtek or the re-issue Mullards, also made in Russia?
Then, I have read that I should go for higher voltage 7189 tubes.
The tubes in the amp now are Mesa. But, I am trying to stay away from Mesa and EH and Groove Tubes, because apparently they source their tubes from anywhere and everywhere. So, you don't really know what you are getting.
I'd like to put some NOS GE, RCA or Sylvania in the amp, but I'm having a hard time finding those, too. Sheesh.
Anyway, it all gets very confusing. I'm new to tubes, so I would welcome any advice that comes my way from fellow AKer's.
Thanks very much.
Cheers for now.
David.
