Which amp is better sonicaly - Kenwood KA-907 or model 600?

This is the best I can do right now. I'll post some better ones once I return home from work. Regarding the sound, the KA-907 sounds very much like my L-09M's. The 600 was more forward sounding, in my opinion. But, as with anything, YMMV.

No need to be surprised EW, the specifications for the Power Bandwidth of the 600 are 5Hz to 50kHz:thmbsp:

Well, it's been more than a year since I started this thread.

I see that KA-907 is finally starting to get a recognition that it deserves! :)

Unfortunately, the price is rising accordingly.

More than one year ago, I got two minty 907s from German eBay (one came with handles). One was 360euros, the other was 400euros.

In recent months there were three auctions with 907s described as broken and/or part units, and they all went for more than 300 euros! :eek:

The last auction was for a repaired unit with all output transistors replaced (with who knows what - there were no details) and it went for approximately 750 euros (around 900 $ US)!

I know that paper specs are paper specs, but on paper KA-907 seems more impressive than model 600.

Power bandwidth is 5 to 100.000Hz
Slew rate is +/-230V/µS
Rise time is 0.8µS
Damping factor (DC - 20KHz) is 100
Etc., etc....

Been looking over this old thread and have been considering a 907. Fantastic discussion on the 600/650/KA-907!!

Have you had your 700C modded by EW?
The modded 700C has a way of making you lose interest in new amp purchases.
Great way to get a big return on your money spent also.:yes:
 
I can say with confidence that the KA-907 is the single finest piece of gear I have owned. However, I am struggling to decide what I want to have modded first - KA-907, 700M, 700M or L-09M's.

Been thinking about EW's mods. The collecting bug has bitten too deeply for me to lose interest in new amp purchases. As an example, have you seen the Accuphase (Kensonic) P-300, C-200, T-100 combo in action?

Your preference for the 907 is a great recommendation considering the selection you have. The one up right now is not in good enough condition...
 
Well you guys know in advance which piece I'd recommend you get modded first.It has a central role in the system.:yes:
I've never heard any system anywhere,ever hint at the possibility of sound quality this good.

Ive been watching the 907 also. Im thinking of taking a shot at it also. been waiting so I dont drive it up.:yes:
 
I always think it's interesting when people say that some companies went into cost cutting hence the new product isn't as good. I worked in a Stereo store when these amps Ka-907 first came out. We had it hooked up in our high end room along with other top gear of the day. Nothing compared with this unit. It was a very good sounding amp. I still own one to this day. Why is it better than the old one? It was known for having a very fast slew rate. The predecessor would not have this same slew rate. Can you hear the difference? I think you can. One of the recordings I've really noticed this on what Larry Carltons Sunrise recording. Comparing the amps using this recording shows some obvious differences. There is a high pitched guitar note that shoots out like a bolt of lightning when listening to it on the Kenwood on other amps this not sounds like nothing special. Oh and to say that the 907 was built cheaper, I still have this amp after all these years I was the original owner and it still looks and sounds like new. Here's a story about slew rate
 
Doesn't the 907 have painted on silkscreen letters that are not engraved like on the 801?
 
Years ago I manages to pick up 2 KA-907s, one from the bay and one from a flea market. The one from. the flea market came with a KT-817 for 45$ for both. I didn't mind putting some money into them. I think they need attention again, but I am curious what "mods" are done to the 907, which I have always felt was a great amp. Norm
