Which CD player is worth buying?

Curious that noone suggested a dvd player. Most of the current ones present an excellent value and dacs. Just a option, I love my Onkyo dvd,sacd,etc player.

I made the same modification to it as I have on all my used CD players over the years. I have a 12" X 10" quarter inch thick piece of plate steel I lay on top of the player. Figure the added 8 pounds +/- helps keep the disc stable.

Have you ever considered ditching the CD player altogether and going with a cheap media player and a dac? I've been using a WDTV Live Plus and a dac to great effect. The only drawback is that it doesn't support gapless playback, which can be a nuisance when listening to live concerts and songs with no planned break in-between.

You mentioned ripping to FLAC, so this is just a natural progression. Add in a big hard drive, load it up, and never handle discs again! I have 3 big hard drives full of movies and music hooked up on my network and multiple WDTV units, and they can all access everything.

Though about that since I have a wd-tv live hub on my home theater for movies. problem is i would need a tv to control it and some way to connect via WiFi to my network....

Looking at new players these are the ones I am looking at:

Teac CD-P650. Burr Brown DACs, USB port for iPod and thumbdrive mp3 playback. $170

Sony CDP-CE500. 5 disc changer, USB Port, unknown DAC and it's a changer $114

Onkyo DX-C390 . 6 disc changer, No USB, it's a changer, good DAC. $140

Onkyo C-7030. Best DAC, no USB. $180 (might be over budget)

Right now, I don't have but a handful of CD's left. I will eventually be rebuilding a collection of used CD's from the local used bookstore. I can make MP3 CD's too. I like the Teac since I can plug my ipod into the unit's DAC.

Any thoughts on the best direction?

I have the Onkyo DX-C390 on a second system. I have had it for a few years with not a single problem. I know it's a changer, but it works well, is rock solid and inexpensive. It sounds very good also with the stock DAC. I do use a GF DAC with it only because it has a lot of versatility.
