Which ESS AMT Monitor do I have?

Picked up these 2 weeks ago, sound great, doing a bit of wood repair. Will finish with Howard's finish restore in dark walnut. I really don't like the orig fabric on the grills. I plan to replace with mellotone fabric from parts express..with the grills on..sound veiled..off is sooo much better..I blame that dang carpet on the grills!!
Love those, and they look great! Love your whole setup! I think @porkloins are very nicely done and if I very came across a pair I'd follow what he did.

Thanks for the idea Porkloin, reason for new fabric is age, dust, color and well, they are nasty dirty. What did you use, it looks good. I just want it to sound better than this original thick rug.
You missed my point about the top board being the big difference between grills on and grills off. The Marshall Salt and Pepper cloth I recovered with is thicker than the stock stuff in your picture. When I re-grilled, I replaced the particle board frames with masonite and separated them into three segments. I had my son and his buddy applying the front grills while I listened with my eyes closed and could never tell the difference between on and off. I had them putting a pillow on top while I blindly listened and could tell the difference every time.

The early AMT3's top board had 3/4" holes in it to let the Heil breath more. It doesn't take much as the Heil has a lot of high frequency speed. I wasn't aware the ESS woofers were USA made. the early ones I saw clearly had a China sticker (PRC) on the box.
However there are better candidates for the price IMHO.
My old PS1220's , while the sounded good, plenty of bass, I had to replace a both woofers at one time, they couldn't handle a lot of power. That's the problem with the Heil, and the 3-way design. The sound is so clean and undistorted, and uncompressed......you don't realize how loud they are really playing. Thye need drivers that can handle the power.
I have noticed now with my custom woofers, my AMT3's never blow the fuse. They seem to be a easier drive for my amp then the stock woofers, Daytons, etc.

Us young bucks without hearing ravaged by time don't have to crank 'em that loud to hear them, Gramps.
I say that as I seem to have gone through a bit of a hearing renaissance as of late - things have cleared up a bit. As soon as I figure out what I've been eating to cause this, I'll start a thread about it. Unfortunately, the only thing I've been ingesting MORE of than in the past is spinach. I wonder if Popeye had a set of AMT's?
Hopefully this is not a calm before the storm, where my hearing takes a big downturn and the Heils start sounding like these.....

Owhhh...MOMMMmmmm!

Question for everyone. I got new foam in the mail. But how should I get the old hardened cloth surround off? Should I use the soften-with-acetone trick and then use isopropyl alcohol?

Also, any idea what the original walnut veneer was stained with? I put new walnut banding on the front and top but it's much lighter than the original. I'm thinking I should stain it with something to match - maybe someone's walked down this road before?

Today's question ... how the heck do these connectors work?? I can't find reference to them anywhere, and can't figure them out! My next step would involve the words "Hulk smash" so hopefully someone is familiar with it ...

Mine look slightly different than yours, and they have hole on the top (or bottom) with set screws in them. Put the wire in the opening and tighten the set screw. I can't see the whole connector in your picture, but that's how mine work.

Oh interesting! Thanks. Yeah I have no screws in mine. Do the screws in yours go in the ends or the top?

My connectors don't look like that but it makes sense the wires would go in the other end just like the other ones do in your pick. Is that connector glued down? Mine were and they came off which was good, I was able to clean the area easier when the came off and then I just glued them back down.

Mine look like they were glued down at some point, but not any more. You can see the chunk of glue still there.

So I tried a couple different sized screws and it just seems like it's going to break as I turn the screws in. @india42 if it's not too much trouble could you please snap a pic of how yours look with the screws?

I've never seen a connector like this and it's embarrassingly hard to figure out. Here are some other pics of it:

I'll get a picture up tomorrow, but I can tell you those are strange looking connectors and don't look like mine.

I’m thinking the wire is held by spring tension. Is it possible you put a flat head screw driver tip in one of those slots in the first picture to release the spring tension and then put in the wire? That’s how it looks to me.
