for Bruce Cockburn I'd definitely go with 'Wondering Where the Lions Are'.
Steely Dan; Pretzel Logic or FM, hard to pick one.

No I think it is perfect - starts very delicately but builds and builds... plus it has great lyrics and imagery - and Lucinda Williams singing harmony. And it sounds very, very good (as does the whole album). What's not to like? ;-)

If we're looking for "little guy with guitar" polite audiophile music... the penultimate track on the album, Deep Lake, should fill the bill.

To my ears the whole CD "Breakfast in New Orleans, Dinner in Timbuktu" tends to sound a bit loud and some tracks on it are a little compressed indeed (Use Me While You Can for example), so I'd rather prefer to take a track from another CD for my comp. I have only two Bruce Cockburn CDs at the moment, so that's the reason I am asking for suggestions, because I will buy the one(s) containing the track(s) suggested here in this thread. :thmbsp:

I'm glad you chose this song. I don't own the complete Sade discography (that's just the reason I am asking for suggestions here), but from the few I have (Love Deluxe included) I had coincidently selected "No Ordinary Love" too.

Steely Dan: "Aja" (title track)

Dire Straits: "Brothers In Arms" (title track)

The song "Aja" is very-dynamic, plus it has those great drum fills by the legendary Steve Gadd...

"Brothers In Arms" is also extremely-dynamic, plus I just love the sound of that original, late '50's Les Paul Standard he plays on this track. It's sweetness personified.

Yeah, that song (especially on vinyl) will surely give your woofers a workout (I have a great vinyl-rip of this one that's my go-to digital version). I almost think this song has TOO-MUCH bass, but it's still a great demo track.
 
Another great demo artist is Patricia Barber. I only started getting into her music over the last year or two, but she's got some truly-great-sounding stuff. Usually I'm not much for vocal jazz (especially FEMALE vocal jazz), but I'll make an exception in her case (plus she's got some great instrumentals as well).

I don't usually dig vocal jazz either, but was listening to Patricia Barber's Modern Cool the other day at a friend's house and liked some tracks, so I'll also make an exception in her case and buy that cd. :thmbsp:
