Which pre-amp/amp for my Marantz 2230/Ar4ax system

Hey everyone

At the moment I have a Marantz 2230 powering a pair of Acoustic Research AR-4ax. Both are serviced and recapped and sound nicely. I am interested in stepping up the system's game by introducing a pre-amp. I was looking at a defected Luxman LV 113 amp today for a friend and since he had another amp lying around we tried bi-amping to overcome a left channel problem. The increase in sound quality was unbelievable. The amp was a Pioneer I believe and I don't remember the model, probably late 80s as the Luxman. Alone it had a terrible sound but pre-amped by the Luxman the sound completely changed.

So I am thinking to do the same for my system, the 2230 is rated only 30w per channel while the AR-4 100w. Some more power would be nice, my system isn't very loud especially in the phono section. So I think the best think to do would be to use the Marantz 2230 as a pre-amp and find a suitable amp. I am still a bit unsure on how much the amp will affect the sound quality, people say that this way I get to keep the warm sound of the 2230, but I guess the amp will also affect the sound of coming out of the pre. My investment so far has been 40€ for the speakers and 150€ for the amp, and I am trying to get the best value for price.

Any ideas?

Yes I am keen in keeping my 2230. I haven't finished restoring it yet and from what I read online it is a very sought-after piece. It is also very flexible with the pre-amplification option so I'd rather get another higher voltage amp. This would create a nice base in case I find another set of speakers to play around with.

I'd use the 2230 as a preamp to a power amp. A power sub even would help those AR's. On brand other then a Marantz, NAD Adcom Carver Hafler ect... there are so many to choose from.
On the phono being low, try a different cartridge or get a different phono pre to connect up.
