Hello I'm new here, I've been doing some work at a record store and have been given the opportunity to choose a TT of my liking to take home with me. the ones he has are as follows...

Aiwa px-e855
Aiwa px-e860
Technics SL-BD22
Techincs SL-QD33
Technics SL-QL5
Sony PS-LX2
Pioneer PL-570
LXI Series
Gemini XL-20
Realistic LAB-330

there are also a couple of receivers i was offered...

technics SA-202
Realistic STA-730
Sony STR-D650Z

and there is a basement full of speakers i haven't gotten to look at. I was just going to ask you guys which of these are the best the Aiwa's seem cheep but i dont know what else to look for.

Hmmm... That looks fairly unspectacular. That SL-QL5 would be kind of cool, as it is a linear tracker.
 
I think one of these might be good.

The Sony would be ok too. They give the Technics a run for their money on many models. I have a PS-LX22 sitting here and it is not bad, though I am not quite sure what differences there are with the PS-LX2. I'd prefer it to some of the other models as it is not P-Mount which gives you more options for carts. Heavier too, usually a god sign with turntables.

Ixnay on the Pioneer as they obviously re-used the model #. :scratch2:

The Technics linear tracker is a neat little thing. I have its non-quartz lock cousin, the SL-5. It looks and feels like a cheap POC but the darn thing sounds good. I added some roof patch material to the bottom of the platter for damping and it helped. The SL-QL5 should be nearly identical to my SL-5, but the quartz lock would have better speed stability.
 
I wouldn't get linear tracker, unless OP is ready to spend considerable time tuning it (I know what I am saying - I own PL-L1000).
 
Both the Aiwas are complete junk. You're not likely to find a worse turntable. So are the Gemini and the LXI. The Realistic LAB-330, Technics SL-BD22 and the Pioneer PL-570 aren't too much better. As noted, the SL-QL5 is pretty nice but very complex and, at this stage, will probably need expert attention.

That leaves the Sony PS-LX2 and the Technics SL-QD33. Both are direct drives. The Technics is quartz locked but the Sony is servo controlled. The Sony takes a standard 1/2" cartridge and the Technics is a P-mount. Both should be reliable performers. The Sony need setting up, though, adjusting tracking force and aligning the stylus but the Technics will be true "plug & play". I'd make a choice between those two.

Personally I would make the choice to leave them all at the shop get cash for the work I do, and use the money I make to invest a better table. One thing I have noticed is that even though turntables have gone up you can still find pretty decent tables for a few hundred dollars on the big auction site, and on Barter town or CL I have seen people get pretty nice tables really cheap. A poor turntable can damage your vinyl which is much more expensive than the money you saved by using a crappy turntable.

That's something I hadn't thought of, really. I don't know how much money we're talking about for the work you did but the best of those tables can be had on craigslist for maybe fifty clams (probably twenty at a thrift). If the cash to you would be that much or more I'd pass on all of the tables. There's nothing there to get excited about.

oh trust me im still getting paid. this is just a nice little extra, thank you all for the input guys. i might take one of them and try to get rid of it on CL and use the money for a better one.
 
The QL5 may need to be regreased. Other than that, it should be plug n play. The Technics close 'n play tables aren't nearly as complex or finicky as a PL-L1000.
 
You didn't mention if any of them have cartridges, other than 'sound working order'. What they have for carts can effect what's good and what's not so good.

I agree with Aerobat, the QL5 at most should need a lube job and maybe a tonearm drive belt if it's been sitting un-used. Otherwise they're fairly bulletproof. Great if you just want to spin records without tweaking.
