Wondering your thoughts on which one would be the better table for $500 or under.

Pro-ject Debut Carbon - $399

Audio-Technica LP120 - $299

Rega RP1 - $499

Music Hall MMF 2.2 - $449

Linn LP12 - $500

Ariston audio rd11s - $500

All I can add is I HAD the Rega rp1. Sounded o.k. but was very susceptible to room vibrations. Tapping on the plinth would come through the arm like crazy. :scratch2:

Yep it is between the Linn and the Ariston - the others should not even be considered in the running...

Another big +1 on this observation. Either one, in good condition, will blow all four of the other turntables on the OP's list into the weeds.

Agree with the others here - last 2 on list if all is well or at the least whatever needs attention you are comfortable with doing or having done.

I see you are in Toronto - are you aware of Canuck Audio Mart? I have seen both of those final 2 tables for sale on that site. It's free and there is great selection.

Good luck!

Also if you become a subscriber here on AK you have access to BarterTown - another very good resource! And they even have a BarterTown North for us Canucks!

Yep, the Linn and Ariston are at a whole other level than the other decidedly entry level 'tables on the list. However, be aware that both these 'tables, especially the Linn, will take a bit more fiddling around to get them set up right, but will reward that effort handsomely.

I thought so. I've been doing some reading and many analogers like the LInn or Ariston. For around $500 I think this would be a a nice move without getting into the $1000 - $1500 range like with the VPI Traveller or Classic.

I'm not going to even come close to disagreeing with the opinions expressed above, they are right, I will say however that I have a Pro-ject debut carbon with acrylic platter and a Speedbox S and I'm happy to say I'm quite pleased with it.

proud new pappa

Well, I'm happy to say I am now the proud pappa of the 1978 Ariston Audio RD-11s in pristine condition. Original arm, stylus and belt. Was sitting around for 30 years hardly play'd. Needs a little tune up and can't wait to try it.

I'll be pissed at you guys if it sounds like my current 1980's Rotel RP-830 which I paid only $50 for.

Jamie

Congrats!
How did you find it? Through personal connections...or other?
Maybe a pic when you have a chance?

Thanks 3kitty for the congrats and the info on the Canuck stuff. Yes through a personal connection...estate type sale.

Can't wait to try it. :music:

I'm hoping it will sound as advertised. :tears:

Anything I should know to improve the performance? Simple mod's or such ?

btw 3kitty, you being from Winnipeg... today I scored a couple of mint mint 45's of the Guess Who on the ole' Nimbus label- "Laughing and Rain Dance" paid .025 cents each

Good for you - I was just curious since there is a really nice example of the Ariston on Canuck Audio right now and thought it may have been that TT you scored.

As for mods, the experts around here will chime in I'm sure - I'm not your guy for that kinda info!!

Nice score on the 45's! Love the Guess Who! Had the chance to see them live once. Way back in the day (while attending University of Winnipeg) my sister partied with Burton Cummings - quite the partier apparently!

Enjoy that TT!
