A friend recommended that I check out Amoeba and Rasputin while I was in the Bay Area. BOY am I sure glad I did! :yes: I left the store with vinyl galore and a smile on my face...

Here's what I picked up (sorry about the pic I had to use my webcam):

Now if I can wait to get home to listen to these... I'm actually having stereo withdrawl. I didn't know that was even possible!

Rasputin in Concord and Amoeba in Berkely. I wish I could live near either of those places.

This was a treat to me because I live in a small town and don't have very many good record stores. There's one I visit but it has a pretty limited selection.

I’m spoiled. Rasputin is an 8 minute walk. With their great selection of LPs in great condition from 25¢ on up, I’m a very regular fan. The other stuff is also reasonably priced. I know you are going to enjoy your treasures. I really like American Garage.

Hey invalidbuffa, Did you notice that the Concord Rasputin location is the old Tower Records store. At night they turn on the huge 'Tower Records" neon sign and it is clearly visible behind the Rasputin sign. They used to be competitors in Concord until Tower failed.

Yeah, and that's what made me confused when trying to find the place- that and the fact that even and odd address numbers sometimes switch sides on some streets!

There are 4 Streetlight Record locations. 2 in SF, 1 in Santa Cruz and the one I go to often in San Jose. Smaller but just as nice as the big two.

I go to the Mountain View Rasputin's which was an old Towers. I've been going to that "store" for over 30 years. There is one in San Jose too.

Did you notice there is a Rasputin's on the same block as Amoeba in Berkeley? The Amoeba in Haight-Ashbury in SF is always a trip.

You'll have to come visit again!

I did notice the nearby Rasputin, and I walked in, but due to time constraints for the day I didn't browse much or buy anything... Maybe next time...

I heard about the Amoeba in SF. Some call it heaven.

I just found out that I will be taking home even more records of jazz and classical. My grandpa has asked me to digitize his albums onto MP3's (I know, but he's a bit deaf and can't hear the difference).

I'm gonna need a bigger cabinet!

I have not been inside Amoeba in SF yet. It's the old bowling alley on Haight.

I go to Raspy's in San Lorenzo, Berkeley and SF as they are all near bart stations. I'll have to go check out the Concord store next time I go to Guitar Center.

I just put on Legend. When No Woman No Cry started playing I was surprised by the 80's synthetic drums. The next two songs were normal up until Buffalo Soldier, which was savagely butchered and mixed with more 80's synth pop.

That's it! I lifted the needle out and took another look at the album...

This is music sacrilege at it's worst!

A warning about Amoeba and any other store... they do sell near perfect forgeries of hard to find albums. I got a brand new sealed Pink Floyd mono of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I was all happy since I got a great deal on it. Took it home checked it out and found out it was a forgery. They took it back.

While the Boston area undoubtedly has some excellent vinyl stores (esp. Stereo Jack's in Cambridge, my fave), one thing I miss about living in SF was Amoeba on Haight. What an amazing store. I've spent many paychecks in there...

The music is even better than the jacket art. If you like that one, be sure to pick up the (IMHO) even better follow-up "Offramp". It has the famous track "James" that was an early example of sampling where James Taylor's voice is "played" on a synclavier.

Hard to believe that was so very high tech just a few years ago.
