White Oak Phase Linear - Dual Mono Control Board

Hello Audiokarma,

Last year about this time a started a WOPL 400 project, and it lasted until spring of this year. I bought all the kits from White Oak Audio, assembled them, then rebuilt an old beat-up Phase Linear 400 amplifier. The results were spectacular.

Fast-forward a year later, and it looks like White Oak has come up with a new and different type of control board. They still have the original control board, but now they have one called dual mono.

It's revision G1.

I have a second PL-400 I want to rebuild again using the White Oak kits.

Would anyone familiar with either 'dual mono' or White Oak Phase Linears want to chime in and explain to me what this is? I've heard of dual mono, but I have no idea really what it is.

I believe I saw a document on the Phoenix site explaining the difference between the e and g revisions. I think it was mostly separating the power sections between the two channels on the board.

From the PDF document:

"The primary reason for the RevG board's existence is to extend the White Oak lineup to provide a dual mono version of the board, 2 completely independent channels on one PCB which still retains the overall mount points and shapes of the previous generations of White Oak Audio control boards. This will allow for improved channel separation performance as the connection between the channels through the +/-15V regulated power supplies has been severed. The sole limitation that remains is the bulk power supply and the care in wiring from it to the control board and backplane boards."




From what I gathered online, a true dual mono setup means having two separate power supplies powering two separate amplifiers (think two separate monoblock amplifiers). But one big beefy power supply from a Phase Linear amplifier is probably just as good as two smaller ones. The damn things are built like a tank.

Man, I may have to do this when I rebuild my other PL-400 amplifier that I have.
