This morning two clowns approach me in a gray Ford van at the nearby Home Depot/Target parking lot. Offers me these super high end Paramax speakers that retail for over 3 Grand for only $550.00. When I tell him that I already have Quad 989s in the LR and Harbeths in the BR he tells me the Paramax will, and I quote: "blow both of those away"!!!! I'm sold!!!!

LR: CAT SL-1 mk III pre; Quicksilver M-135 monos, Quad 989s, VPI TNT-II w/SME-V, Tandberg TD-20A, Rega Planet
BR: Mac C-20 and MC-60s, Harbeth Compact 7s, Thorens TD-124 w/ SME-3012 (my dad's old system except for his Altec Valencias)

man.. that would have been a steal...

Last weekend I was at a gas station, and two jokers were trying to sell a guy a pair if Kirsch speakers from the back of a pick-up truck. They were parked next to me.. so as I was filling my ice-chest and laughing, I finally turned around and asked them "What, no white van?" The main guy gets a nervous laugh, and the helper tosses the speakers into the cab and jumps in.. They took off. The mark said "Thanks, I didn't know how to get rid of them and their junk" I'm up front and blunt is what I told him...

I seen the same thing when I was getting gas, some guy bought some strange speakers from a guy in a SUV, I was laughing. I should have went over to the guy and said hey you can get those at the flea market for 50$.

Unfortunately, he'll have the speakers on CL in a couple of days after he realizes that they're junk.

Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but you missed out. See, you mistook the *gray* van, super high end speaker opportunity for the *white* van speaker scam. Bummer for you.

They must have been new. I've never known them to be so easy to get rid of. Or maybe I just look like a mark. I have told them I was calling the police and opened my cell phone and still had them keep up the sales pitch.

You've got to give them an A for effort.

I know first hand these white van speakers last at least 20 years.
In 1990 a white van parked outside our video rental store and two guys came in preaching some Pro Acoustics Research speakers we could have for only $200 a pair. In their van were loads of carpet covered big professional looking speakers. We told them we don't need any speakers and they left.
2-3 days later they came back, this time half of these speakers were covered with some laminate or vinyl. We told them to get out and never come back cause we are not buying any crap speakers.
The third time they came back my partner was alone in the store.
He bought 3 pairs cause he couldn't take it anymore. We had a fight that evening, but the speakers are still making music (or whatever) today with no signs of defect, even at daily high volume levels.
So, i guess for semi-professional use, white van speakers are OK.

As was mentioned previously, there is still that nasty sales tax/business license thing.

It might not be enough to get them arrested, but it would probably be enough to get the authorities to chase them off.

That's not even getting into the fraud issue...

Last time I saw one of those white vans, I went into the business that owned the parking lot where they were attempting a sale, told the front-of-store manager (with plate number), and they called 911. They got a citation, IIRC.
