who has hearing damage?

Hi
i have a Tinnitus on left side since 1993. Asshole standing lefthand behind me fired a gun on nu year right (left) beside my head... frequencies i can hear the complete (for my age possible) range, but always a more or less ~16khz hiss in left ear.
real BS

I remember a few years ago, possibly as many as 5, I had my ears tested and the nurse (???) told me I had the hearing of an 18 year old.
No, she didn't try to jump my bones, she was just amazed.
I just tried these tones on my cheap Altec Lansing AVS 200 2 way computer speakers and could definately hear all the way up to 19Khz, although a little less in my right ear.
The speakers don't seem to reproduce the 20khz tone, they make a tone lower than the 19khz when I try it.
I think I'm probably good up to 20khz, just these crappy speakers at work suck.

I have had tinnitis for about 20 years. My first "real" damage was in '91. I went to a free concert with my then girlfriend (unaffectionately known as the BoozHag). The Fabulous Thunderbirds were playing (post Jimmy Vaughn) and she dragged me right up front. My left ear has had a pronounced ring since that night. More recently though, I showed some seriously bad judgement. During Thanksgiving my brother in law took my son and I out to do some shooting. We found some ear protection for mini-me but, none for me. What the he!! I decided to go without. I'm not sure whether it was the 44 magnum or the mini 14 but, my left ear is seriously f#$%#!! up now. I have a pronounced suck out in the midrange. Certain highs sound like a tweeter with a slit cut into it. I am considering selling my tube amp now. I can no longer tell the difference between it and a Yorx.
:dammit: :pity: :pity: :dammit:

That sucks :pity: , try a Sound Design product vs. the Yorx

Really, I feel bad for you, that you would consider selling your tube gear after that, :tears:

Here we go. Certainly more than anyone wanted to know....

Test your hearing online properly here. Use the free 'Professional' test near the bottom. -sf

Background: 43 years old, history of rock concerts but fairly careful, started wearing hearing potection to mow lawns and in airplanes last 10 years, don't listen loud at home but infrequently for only a song (2-3 min). Never loud on headphones. (Room used for the online test was not silent.)

Report: No hearing at 16 kHz or above!, 'suck outs' of 20-30 db deficit centered at both 1Hz and 6Hz on both L & R, but extent is asymetric by about 5-10 db.

Let me know if this is a common pattern perhaps (below).

(Tips. The calibration tone is a quiet triplet about 200Hz. Use the automatic test first, and then do a final 'manual test' with the 1 db increment setting while watching the red slider bar on X-axis scale to retest and finalize each frequency.)

Good Gravy!

After taking the online hearing test, I'm selling all of my audio gear and enrolling in some signing classes. The end is near!

Anything I say about any piece of audio gear is now officially HIGHLY suspect! I don't know my ear from my ass! I bet I'd hear better thru my asshole, too!

S. L. Dude your left ear is tuned to 20Hz! :O Seriously, did you have a quality pair of closed headphones and a quiet room? The other thing is you have at least one ear working great 20-20k. Just move around a lot while you listen!-sf

It's actually worse than the graph indicates. Although I can 'hear' in my good ear, those tones generated in supposedly the bass region, those tones sound bass-less and farty-fart like, in my 'good' ear. In my 'bad' ear, when I could hear them, they were nice low bass notes as they should be.

So, in my 'good' ear, I detected a tone, but it sure as hell wasn't bass.

Man...I'm focked. I'd probably think a damned close 'n play was hi-fi if blindfolded. Anythign I say...just ignore it.

I listened to rulerboyz test and nothing..................

I went to the tripod site and heard them all clearly :thmbsp:

You had me ready to sell the Tannoy's for a minute there. Maybe something wrong with the file.

I can hear the 20khz tone, both open and through headphones. (Gotta love the tweeters in the Mach Twos  ) I can also hear TV tube noise (15.7khz) clearly, several rooms away at that. It drives me up a wall, too, I can't watch TV because of it.

I'm a little concerned about my midranges, and too chicken to actually take a test. oh well.

Are there any -9dB earplugs on the market which don't need custom moulding? The Etymotic ER20s look great but -20dB is probably going to be too much attenuation and will ruin the enjoyment of the concert I'm going to next weekend.

Looks like the general case -had hoped to legitimize the test and get some comparison data in the 1 and 5 Hz range. (A lot people report hearing above 16Hz, so they are probably doing fine.) -sf

A bit of ringing in my ears due to a loud car stereo in the early 80's. I've grown use to it over the years, kind of like floaters in the eyes. Once in a while loud music will hurt my ears, so I tend to take it easier than I once did. I still hear very well though. I haven't noticed any loss. Brad :nono:

I've had tinnitus as long as I can remember, lots of ear infections too. I was surprised that I could hear the 20khz file.I remember taking a hearing test when I was a child and not being able to hear the beeps over the ringing in my ears. 20% hearing loss back then.

I also have tinnitus. Started when I was about 27, so I've had it for about 9 years. Not sure what triggered it, but I subjected myself to some loud concerts in my younger days. And having some dimwit Sargeant drop an m-80 by me to simulate a bomb when I was in ROTC. I practically stepped on the damn thing. Ear was painful and ringing for days. Now I always wear ear protection when I mow the lawn, etc. now. Part of the reason I got back into vintage gear is to have the music mask the ringing. Surprisingly, over the years I pay attention to it less and less (the tinnitus, not the music). Glad to know I'm not the only one! Let's keep this thread going. In fact, one time I went to an audiologist and got fitted for a hearing aid in my bad ear, but couldn't stand the attenuation to the higher ranges where I have the hearing loss. I'm mulling over the idea of getting the aid again. Conventional thinking says that the boost in the higher ranges would, in a sense, provide a natural mask to the ringing.

Im only 16 and i can hear CRT screen noise but can only just hear the 16000hz tone in the test from the site with "Download all 20 tests in one zip file". i have deafened myself with headphones over the years and my solution is when you cant hear it, make it louder. My amp has given up on one channel, but i think the sound from the pre amp still gets through, and anything above that is clipped, so there is no further that i can turn it up without loosing the balance :( For normal listening through speakers they are on left A and left B and then i loose some of the sounds that are only in the right channel. So its hearing loss from excessive volumes and a bad amp. Can you loose bass tone hearing? i dont know what id do without it. What is the lowest anyone can hear?

Eventually you can, high and mids go first usually however.

Sometimes I feel the need to use the balance control to compensate for loss in the left ear...bloody annoying!
