Who has Sound Dynamic speakers?

Ron Pilgrim

Well, whadya say, Pilgrim
I know that Sound Dynamic became Energy, but those Sound Dynamics were awesome. My first exposure to them came in 1979 when my brother came to visit me in the big city to buy some HPM Pioneer speakers. Took him to my favorite stereo shop and he had the set he wanted picked out when the salesman offered an audition of these new speakers. Well, he played Prism Armegeddon thru top line Pioneer unit at a very high volume and they sounded great. We looked behind us and the hanging mobile brochures were spinning around as if possessed. The Pioneers went back on the shelf and my bro went home with the Sound Dynamics. Anyone else with a similar experience?

I am a big Sound Dynamics fan, Have had many sets over the years. I still have 2 pairs of 10s and a pair of 12s. I have owned the 6s as well as a set of SMT-1000's. The 1000s I sold to my friend as he pestered me for years for them. I kinda of regret that decision because they only were out for a year along with the 1200 SMT. They had the horned aluminum tweeter along with a passive radiator that matched the size of the main driver.
Awesome speakers.

Still have a pair of the 6S in the closet; they remain my only 'keepers' small enough to pick up without hurting yourself. :D (see avatar)

I saw a pair of sound dynamics at a garage sale. Big silver tweeter like
your atvar. Needs refoaming. Maybee I should go get them.

Go Habs Go.

I have a pair of SOUND DYNAMICS 6S that were given to me in 1995 for free. The woofer surrounds were crumbling, hence they were replaced with a pair of CTS 6" woofers having more compliant rubber surrounds. The horn loaded dome tweeters were retained as they seemed to be high quality ubits. After the modification the pair of 6S sound amazingly good for such small heavy speakers.

:worthless... Had to do it ...
A friend of mine wanted a pair of Cerwin Vegas in the 1980's and
the salesman's demo was more then convincing... I bought the ones with a
ported, 10 inch, yellow surround woofer and the aluminum horn tweeter.
Nice enclosure and grills, please, post picts!!!.

Did you keep the original 6 inch woofers? They can be refoamed and then your 6S will factory stock again.

The horn tweeters are interesting - I'm curious to know if it's a constant directivity horn. Does anyone know if it is an exponential horn, or what the flare is?

I found a pair of 15S a couple of months ago which I picked up for $25. The foam, miraculously, was perfectly fine on one, but completely shot on the other. As such, I have only listened to the one, which, as you can imagine, is a pretty impressive speaker for rock music, but personally I think they are probably more suited to a party type setting than for detailed listening. Do they even make speakers with 15 inch woofers anymore? lol

concert monitor

I have a pair of concert monitor 100?

They need foam but are a nice sounding little 2 way, mirror imaged with solid cabs.

I've seen , heard their bigger stuff and for the most part don't think the build quality is as good as the Energy 22 line of gear. I'd compare the SD stuff with earlier offerings from Paradigm.

They sold a ton of Sound Dynamics through the local Sight & Sound stores back in the 80's but I have only found 2 pairs oddly within the same week at the SA. First was the 6s for $4.00 a pair, tweeters intact but one 6 1/2" woofer sadly replaced with a radio shack parts the 1 original woofer just needs a refoam. The second set is a ported 10" 2 way for $5.00 a pair, 2 more aluminum tweeters and a pair of woofers to refoam. Overall build quality of the last pair is not as impresive as the little 6s pair. I think the cabinet could use a bit bracing and the 10" woofers do not wiegh much more than the 6 1/2". The tweeters look the same from the front but they are built differently. Sure would like to restore the 6s, anyone have an original woofer or sugest a good replacement? I would like to try them with a small tube amp how efficeint are they? Anyone have a brochure or specs?

Canucks and their speakers...

You guys really like your speakers! Are they made there? :smoke:

Sorry for the double post; I don't know how to delete.

Sound Dynamics were manufactured in Ontario, Canada. I still have some brochures around somewhere. I'll try to find 'em.

I've had a pair of 15s for about 25 years and my sister gave me a pair of concert monitor 1500's last year. I just dont have the space for these huge speakers so am trying to sell the 1500's. The 15s sound so much better to me and I'll keep them forever but the foams are starting to break down so will need that done soon. The 15s tweeter, the silver one with the orange dome is much better than the later black one.

I bought the 15s used from a guy I met at a party, at his house for $400 somewhere around 1984. I was so amazed by the sound I had to have em!

Brochure

I have a copy of the Concert Monitor series and attached a low res file.
I do have a 2MB bmp of the same if someone wants it.

What model are these ?

Thanks for the brochure scan I managed to read most of it. Anyone know what model is in the picture, 10" woofer does that make it a 10S ?

Yes, that is the 10S, my wife has a set that she bought new.
They are now waiting for me to re-foam them.

I was supprised to see different tweeters, 10S:model # SD477T6 (left) and 6S:model # HL-C-OISD (right). Did they use different tweeters for bigger and smaller speakers or was this a design change?
