Who has tried the EVG stylus on their Shure V15 III?

Hi Folks,

I use an EVG on my M91ED to save wear on my SAS when playing records that are not in the best condition. It's a very good stylus for the money. In fact, on certain recordings, I prefer it to the JICO.

I have a V15 III with an original VN35E that I bought NOS in the original packaging. I've probably put less then 50 hours on it and want to preserve it. Especially since I just saw one on eBay for $499! Not that he'll necessarily get that but it tells me mine has some value.

I just ordered an EVG and while I'm waiting I though I'd get some reviews from those of you that have tried one.

Cheers!

John

I like it better than the SAS... You sacrifice some resolution but get more midrange glow and overall 'oomph.'

I suspect that the EVG will sound closer than the SAS to the original stylus.

As much as I respect Beatcomer I have to disagree.

The SAS on the V15-III is amazing, especially when mounted on an SME 3009 low mass arm. I also tried an EVG and it is indeed quite good for the money. It has the full lower midrange as mentioned. It does however lack the detail in the upper register. Did not have the air or the soundstage presentation I was accustomed to with the SAS. Once my SAS wore out I played an EVG for three months. I became disillusioned with it as my main stylus.

I then went to a Denon DL 301 mk II moving coil and there is no looking back.

I don't disagree with this...

I guess it comes down to which compromise are you willing to accept... resolution or tonality?

I have several after-market styli for my V15 type 3 including the EVG. For my ears, the stylus that sounds closest to the original Shure is the JICO VN35... http://stylus.export-japan.com/product_info.php?cPath=18&products_id=1044 ...the others are o.k. The cheapest of the bunch I use only for records that I don't care much about.

I have no way of proving this but I suspect that the cheaper styli have less polishing of the diamond tip which could result in premature record wear.:dunno:

I got one . Mine came on a Dual 606 with the original Shure stylus . But the tip came off and had to get a replacement . It sounds good to me . I can't bring myself to spend the money on the SAS . Most of the albums I have were bought at the Goodwill and not what you would call prestine . I dont know if I could bring myself to drop a SAS on these things ...LOL .
Rudy .

EVG's Japanese-manufactured Shure styli (and some of their others) are made by JICO.

Try an after market HE-hyper elliptical stylus.

Sounds very close to your original Shure nude mount elliptical stylus. :music:

Actually, an SAS might bring out more music and less noise from your records, since it might be able to get to an undamaged, deep section of the groove wall.

As I mentioned, for some recordings I prefer the EVG to the SAS on my 91ED. It seems warmer and punchier. But yes, there is some sacrifice of detail. I also have an original "Super Track" that I like to use on old LPs and mono records but I don't know how much wear it has so it's not a fair comparison.

I don't have a SAS for the V15 so I'll be comparing the EVG to a NOS VN35E.

Just a heads up malden, I just ordered an EVG from a source that i've used before for $14.19, shipped.

The eBay listing you posted seems to have been removed but the one offered on the JICO site looks identical to the EVG that I ordered, right down to the printing on the stylus guard. But, that could be where the similarities end.

My typeIII came to me with a broken stylus. First, I bought a low-cost Pfanstiehl. It suffered sibilance issues I couldn't correct with tracking force adjustments. Second, I bought the low-cost EVG PM3146DE ($15 on eBay). I don't know how it compares to more expensive options or the original Shure stylus, but I think the EVG sounds terrific.
