Who is the re-cone guru?

I missed out on a minty pair of D130s on the last 2 seconds of an auction, by 2 bucks!

Well, I couldn't wait, and bought a couple that will need reconing. While I have done a lot of foam surrounds with success, I'm not sure I want to attempt reconing a good quality speaker as my first attempt. That being said, who is the best JBL D130 recone expert that folks here have used?

While I will ship them, it would be nice to find someone local in the Northeast to save a couple a bucks.

Thanks,
Tom

I think the bigger question is - where are you going to find cone kits? Probably some dodgy aftermarket stuff out there, but I'd be surprised if JBL still had any ( haven't looked ).

Oh, hadn't thought of that? I just thought they were readily available. I see tons on eBay. Didn't think that they would be dodgy.

Crap...

I 'think' Bill LeGall has that covered too...! :thmbsp:

Bill, has not just one pair, but two pairs of Infinity IRS's...!!!:drool: A pair of IRS-V's and a pair of IRS-III's. Both personally rebuilt by hand by Bill. Just sick!!! :ntwrthy::thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp::ntwrthy:

No doubt the guy has some cone kits, and some nice Infinity speakers. The trick is having not just "some" cone kit, but a JBL D130 cone kit.

My guess is that they haven't been made in years, maybe decades. I looked on eBay and didn't see any.

While I've never used them, Orange County Speaker keeps a pretty decent list of what JBL kits are available, and what drivers have to have aftermarket parts installed.

Note: Original parts for the D130, K130, and E130 Series
are no longer available, but we have (OCS Parts) kits that
are built to the orignal (sic) specs.

JBL no longer offers cone kits for the D130 series. However, there are good replacements available, and good repair shops - like Millersound - know what to use. Demand for the D130 variants is high, and good shops will be quite experienced in rebuilding them.

The OP needs to call Bill. He's very approachable. Plus, if Bill can recone the D130's using the proper kit, he'll let you know. If not, and you have a kit that he can use, he'll use it.

Also, there are recone kits, for the D130's, on eBay. Though, I don't know how NOS, or accurate they are? Depending on the age and rarity of the speakers, an owner may not have much choice, and have to use whatever is available. That, or wait for the real thing to show up on eBay. :boring:

Springfield Speaker Repair has all sorts of dead-stock stuff. If there are any original D130 recone kits out there, he'd probably have them.

I don't think the OP is interested in doing the work himself. While SSR has a few recone kits, they seem to focus primarily on surrounds. Millersound is as good as it gets for recone work. No affiliation, other than having used their services.

Don't know about your particular drivers bur simply speakers has done great work for me in the past. I use them because they are somewhat local to me.

Sean Ryan at Simply Speakers,
Just checked, and they do have the parts to re-cone the D130.
Here's one of his videos doing doing a JBL2226..

Thanks guys. I actually had been in contact with Simply Speakers over the last couple of days. He said they are out of stock but expect some next week.

I was just checking here to see what the consensus was on a shop. Again, local to me would be a plus. NJ/PA/NY area would be nice.

Thanks again!
