who knows about the old KLH speakers?

Hi

Came across a pair locally, KLH Model Six, near mint condition. I do recall the KLH speakers being somewhat cool way back when I was younger and had a memory(bg), and i also recall the KLH had numerous model numbers in their lineup.

So, what models were(are) considered the better ones?

Models 5, 6, 9, 17, 32, and 33 were very popular. The Models 6, 17 and 32 being fantastic sellers for the company.

If you need a pair of speakers and those 6's are still available, you may want to go see about them.

Sixes are great speakers. The early ones had a beautiful wood cabinet and 12" woofers. The later ones had vinyl covering and 10" woofers. I have the later ones in my bench setup and the sound is great. The early ones have the drivers epoxyed into the cabinet, they are not serviceable.

Been told the the 6's have been in the family, since bought in 1963. Vague water stain ring on top of one. Looks like the 12" speakers in 'em. Never been in storage, always in the house. They have the bi-wired setup with frequency switch on the back.

I don't 'really' need these, but geez when you see something this old come along it just stops me sometimes :cool:

So, I have no idea of what would be a good buy or not. Owner says he'd likely take $40 for the pair. Wife will think I'm nuts for this, but is this one of those 'do it' situations? How rare is it to come across these like this?

Dr*A: Might the Model Six history be a little more complicated than that?

My Sixes have wood veneered cabinets, but removable woofers, which I am pretty sure are 10" and not 12".

BTW, free troubleshooting tip. As-found, the old KLH's frequently have nonfunctioning tweeters. In my (admittedly) limited experience, the root cause is typically not bad tweeters but rather bad crossover capacitors (NP electrolytics)... a way-easy and inexpensive (unless you go with botique caps) fix.
 
I've got no problems using a soldering iron real careful, but I am hesitant if from what I understand is a situation where this particular 63 vintage model 6 is a sealed cabinet, and the grill is not meant to come off, making the usual change of capacitors not so easy.

Any ideas what's the best way to invisibly invade the situation?

At present, they are sorta near mint, and while I've got small motor skills(and patience), I'd like to try and respect the speakers and not too visibly hack them up if I get them.

I think the grills on the old ones are glued on.
The only thing I can think of is listen to them and make sure the tweets are working.
There is a way to get to the crossover on the old ones, but it requires surgery. You make a small hole in the rear of the cabinet and cut a suitable rectangle out with a saber saw.. Save the piece and when done, cut 4 pieces of 3/4" x 2" wood to fit the sides of the hole. Drill holes in the sides of the hole and mount the 4 pieces of wood with glue and screws on the inside of the cabinet to make a support for the piece of the back you cut out. Then drill holes in the back piece and glue and screw it in place. Seal the gap with RTV sealant. i did this on a pair I got from my cousin. the tweeters were bad also, so I had to cut them out with a saber saw. Made a flange larger than the hole to install the new tweeters. Sounds ugly but it worked out fine.
Mr Hardy, glad your speakers have real wood veneer! Since I've only seen the 2 pair my experience is limited. I have seen many 17's, but no other 6's.

<div class="blockquote">This is exactly how I found mine. Dead caps resulting in no treble. They're 8 uf, IIRC. Mine were installed with wire nuts, so no soldering required, although it's preferred. Mine have removable woofers. My dad has a couple of pairs. I'll ask him if his woofers are glued in.
It's a common vintage speaker with a well deserved reputation for nice sound. With a quality source and a mid powered tube amp they're an awful lot of fun.</div>
