Picked these up at a garage sale today ($5 for the pair). I can't find any information anywhere online about them. This is all of the info off the speakers:

Acoustics - Model 400P - 4 Way - Acoustic Suspension - 100W

Who made these speakers?
How old are they?

Thanks everyone !!!!

Most of the drivers look "off the shelf", as in available through R.S., P.E., etc. Not saying they're home grown or DIY.

The big question is, do they sound any good?
Followed by...
How heavy? Size of the woofer? Have you looked inside, how do the drivers look? Is that a cheap piezo tweeter? All this stuff will tell you if you have a nice pair of sleeper-brand speakers, or $5 garage system speakers. :D

So they are lower end speakers?

My set up right now: (pic attached)

Phillips 437 TT
Marantz 2270
Paradigm V2 Monitor speakers

I am looking for the best speakers for the 2270
and also a nice cart for the 437 TT.... any ideas?

Again, Thanks everyone

Well, no one actually said that, because we don't know. My questions above were not loaded, they really are the parameters I use when I look at a speaker to determine its potential, before I've even heard it.

As to the best pair of speakers...you'll find there is no 'best' set of speakers for any given piece of gear. There are many variables in addition to the receiver/amp, including what kind of music you listen to at what volumes, space considerations, whether you like new or vintage gear, and last but not least, your own ears and preferences for sound which are different from many others'.

The best way to find out is to listen to as many systems as you can, and also do some reading here on AK. The Speaker Forum is a good place, as well as General.

Oh, regarding carts, I am no expert on that, find it very confusing, but read up over on the TT forum.

Welcome to the obsession.

Well, that piezo tweeter and small plastic cone tweeter could predict that those are probably not that good speakers. But for $5 I would grab them too, just for fun.

Oh my..... I sold this line back in the mid to late 80's at a major appliance store that dabbled in mid-fi electronics. If I remember correctly the TOTL cost us about $25 each. This one is a step or so below that. So sorry......OTOH....I'm a big Paradigm fan. Go with those.

Probably not anything special, but they made an attempt to make the cabinets a little more ornate around the front at least.

I redid a pair of Acoustics for a friend about 3 years ago. They were quite decent speakers with CTS drivers. Very similar to Avid or HH Scott speakers at the time but sold for less as they were made for store brands.

Here's the thread on it...

Yours look to be somewhat newer versions though and may be completely different.

Yeah, they're low end speakers. You're Paradigms should be a better match to the Marantz.

But hook both pairs up, and switch back and forth. We call that an A/B comparison (((because we're geniuses))).

Which sounds better? The Acoustics probably have a deeper, but muddy, bass.

Actually, you have an awesome little system. I'd keep everything you have, and add an active subwoofer between the pre-amp outputs and the main inputs.

I love the 2270!

For a phono cartridge, I'd recommend a Denon DL-103 if you have a MC input. Denon DL-110 if you only have a MM input.

You'll have to spend at least $250 to get a sub-woofer with a nice active crossover.
