Why are HDtracks FLAC files only showing 44.1 on DAC

I downloaded the free HD sampler from HDtracks and it says they're 96/24 FLAC files but on two different DACs (Rega and Musical Fidelity M1) it only shows 44.1. What's the deal?

Thanks,
Michael

It's probably the output settings of your computer. Perhaps check here...

I have not had much success at trying to get ASIO going on my computer so I don't have options there in FOOBAR, I can only direct it to use the audio devices on the computer.

Yes the problem is most likely caused by DirectSound, it'll resample everything to the same sample rate.

WASAPI or ASIO would fix that:

http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_wasapi

http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_asio

Once these output modes have been installed, new output devices will appear in the output device menu:

Choose WASAPI or ASIO depending on your personal preference.

You are in for a treat if you haven't tried this before!

Also I recommend that you disable replay gain:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/534621/how-to-remove-replaygain#post_7210817

Edit: that post wasn't very clear, I'll explain it in stead.

In Foobar2000, click "File" - "Preferences" - "Playback" You'll see a "ReplayGain" setup menu, set "SourceMode" and "Processing" to "none".

Those settings are global, and will cause all 44.1KHz files to be played at 96KHz fx.

WASAPI and ASIO won't do any resampling, the music will always be played at the correct sample rate.

I understand.

ASIO didn't seem to work, but I was heretofore unaware of WASAPI. In the last few minutes I've downloaded it, installed it, and now have the options thereof.

Yeah ASIO requires special drivers (it's a studio standard, for pro audio interfaces), WASAPI does not.

I installed WASAPI and it's showing up on the list of installed components. I also disabled replay gain in both source mode and processing. How do I get to the output devices menu so I can enable WASAPI?

I'll make a step by step like before:

In Foobar2000, click "File" - "Preferences" - "output" in the "Device" menu chose "WASAPI : your audio device"

Edit: "output" is a sub menu to "playback" expand the "playback" field and "output" will appear further down the list.

Also, i thin you may just want to confirm that your output device has exclusive mode enabled like in the second screen shot i posted. Sounds like Adda probably could confirm if thats actually necessary, or if selecting wasapi will inherently take care of that too.

It can't hurt to check, I think it is enabled by default.

Ahh. Didn't expand the "playback" before....there's ouput.

Now I see can choose either "WASPI (event) : Speakers (Musical Fidelity v-Link 192 Audio)" or "WASAPI (push) : Speakers (Musical Fidelity v-Link 192 Audio)".......which one, "event" or "push"?

Hmm, I don't know!?! those options don't appear in my system, just a sec, maybe a new version of WASAPI came out since I downloaded mine.

Edit: yup I'm at v2.1 hehe, brb.

From testing alone, "event" seems to work better when skipping through tracks, while "push" causes a small glitch, no biggie.
On my system anyway.

I'll do a search and see if I can find an explanation.

Edit: you know what, since no clear answer pops up easily, this must be one of those situations where you go with what works/sounds best to you.
If there is no difference, then I doesn't matter one way or the other.
If you have problems with playback, try the other setting.

Edit2: I just ate Brie de Meaux :D

Do I still need to do this?
