Why can't my older CD player read certain CDs?

Have had many cd players that straight up refused to read cd-r. Some would do it if they were burnt at very slow speed. Some would only read certain brand of cd-r regardless of burn speed. Some would read all but cd-rw. I never looked further into why as I usually just changed cd-r brand or cd-player.
 
Worked on one last night , blue ray, etc player, that was having trouble loading the next scene on a matrix disc. Cleaned and lubed the rails, etc. same issue after testing again. Tried several other discs/ movies/ audio and it played flawlessly. Possibly the disc.
 
also recall having a similar issue with different cd player and where it either wouldn't play, or acknowledge the cd or if it did play, it would skip. I adjusted slightly, a screw on or by the laser eye, and it played consistently.
 
I have a Kenwood DP-1100 CD Player. I bought it new in 1985. This unit has more electronics than any new ones I have seen. Even when it was new it would not play some disks on the first try but after a few tries it would play. I have been told that it has an OPH-32 transport. I took it to Kenwood service back in 85 and was told there was nothing wrong with it.

I finally bought another CD player to replace it. This new one is a Phillips dual deck player that was capable of digitally making a copy of a disk provided that the disk wasn't copy protected.

I made a few copies of the disks that I have trouble playing in the Kenwood. The copies played all the time with no problems in the Kenwood.

I was told that CD's have an information part at the beginning edge of disk to tell how many tracks and other data that it needed to play the disk. If it would not read this, it would eject.

Could it be that the laser eye could not go far enough to read the information part of the disk? Is there a way to adjust the travel on this laser.

Any feedback would be much appreciated
 
No expert, but this is true.
1. CD’s must be spotless.
2. The laser lens must be spotless.
Those two things have fixed several CD players I’ve owned over the years.

I just bought a “wet cd” cleaning cd online. Many years ago. It worked, so I was thrilled at the time.
With that said, CD players are a dime a dozen at my local Goodwill stores.

hi I have a pioneer system top of the range from the late 90s. THe cd player will playe cdss i bought in the 90s perfectly but some cds on a certain label, like the kranky tim hecker reissues it will read tham but jump through all the tracks
