I've seen the ad for the Vegas' over the past month. Its funny, the ad sounds like they guy went all out and got those subs which made the price go up :)

Yeah,it is upsetting.Guess people go for the mental short cut and opt for more bass.If it works great in a car, whooooo, gotta be a frickin' blast in the house.
I have seen a pair of 70s vintage Jensens on Philly CL done that way.The seller continues to lower the price.

I suspect it's more a case of "oh oh foams are shot, what have I got handy, or what do my friends have".
Saw some CVs in a thrift shop, one with original woofer, foam shot (basically gone), and one with a car woofer.

It's the same old story, the foam goes bad, you're half a case of beer deep, Walmart automotive is open late, the credit card still has a few $$$ left on it......this story plays out more often than you would ever guess!

Perfectly good vintage speakers needing ONLY a re-foam and that's what happens- it is a dirty dog shame.......and THEN they had the golden gonads to try and sell them for top dollar!!! Half the time they will wallow the hole out to fit the next larger size woofer and really muck things up........

Yeah, I've always wanted to bay BIG BUCKS for a pair of B&W speakers with...."Blow-master" auto sound woofers in them!?

I think DC270 is right. THe foam goes and they go find a woofer the same size in the most conveinient place. It's ignorance. Maybe some of our better refoamers should start placing "DON'T REPLACE THEM WOOGERS!" ads on Craigslist to raise awareness, or I BUY SPEAKERS WITH DETERIORATED SURROUDS. Better get a seperate email address for the last one.

Sadder still are the woofers that wind up in the landfill as a result of the woofer transplant. It's a shame, but it's really all about awareness. Had I tossed my Mach Two's (my first thought when the foams went bad) not only would that have been one less pair in use, but some good drivers (especially the tweeters) out of circulation as well. Thankfully I did later learn about refoaming and repaired the woofers, then sold them, the complete systems, to a very happy camper.

What's the big deal? The people kept the speakers working given the amount of knowledge or money they had, I think that's laudable. When I started doing DIY speaker stuff I didn't know much either and I used what was available.

No doubt some of you jaspers making snide remarks know all about everything, eh? You never did something that someone with more knowledge would consider half-assed?

Never:smoke:

When I see something like that I ask if they still have the original woofers. Usually it is no (at that point I explain their error and tell them I would have paid their price with the bad woofers), but sometimes yes.... Then I get to talk the seller down explaining that the new woofers "that pound", are of zero value to me. I usually get the speakers for about a third of the asking price and a simple refoam and I have a nice pair of speakers.

Look, it seems obvious to us, but most people out there just don't value or appreciate gear the same way.

OK- I will admit to having "half assed" my share of speaker in my earlier days just to get some kind of sound going. It was not right then, and still not right now. I am sure the more experience had a good laugh at my ignorance back then, as I get to laugh at others attempt of half assed repairs even now.

With me it was an event of evolution where I grew smarter in knowing that it was once a pretty good speaker and to go and pay money to make it a bad speaker by driopping anther foriegn driver in it is expensive folly- especially now that I know it can be repaired and sound proper much cheaper than buying a misc driver to drop into it. While I may make fun of other peoples apparent stupidity, I can easily reflect on my own! Been there one that- and not going back!

I feel the same way when people renovate architecturally significant homes with cheap contemporary solutions.

SO TRUE!!

Right now I am working in a 1920's house that was added on to in the 80's....Looks EXACTLY like my 1983 townhouse! None of the original charm left! :tears:

Bottom Line is if they own the Speakers no matter what they are they have every right to do as they wish with them! I myself agree with all of you who hate it being done but like I said it's their perogative to do so and believe me it's not just Speakers that are butchered this way.I have come across many examples of Audio Pieces that were changed and most of them not for the better in my opinion:):nono:

Who cares what they do with it....but, when they then put a jacked up price on the piece, thats when it becomes funny :)
