Why do rock stations tease like this?

MetalFisher

Like during their bumper, a deep voice might say, "The Ox, 98.1..." Then you hear snippets of songs like Boston's "Don't look back", Aerosmith's "Toys in the attic", and Zep's "Black Dog", Then that testosterone-filled deep voice saying "Playing the best classic rock in town."

So you are feeling like, "Hell yeah man!" all hyped for some serious guitar rock.

THEN they play the next song, some boring, sleepy dentist-office rock song like The Eagle's "Lying eyes" or Segar's "Shame on the moon".

What is the purpose of doing that?

..to keep the listeners that don't like the current song tuned in? Like hording a wide-as-possible audience together, basically saying "maybe you don't like this song, but something of your liking will come along soon".

I'm assuming you live in the US? Count yourself lucky on actually receiving "rock radio" at all. There isn't, and never was, a single dedicated rock station here in the Netherlands.

Dunno. There is one station for classical music, and one called "Slam FM!" Not kidding.. That last one plays the guilty pleasures of the serieusly tacky house/club/dance sort of music. Nobody will ever admit listening to Slam FM!, but it's still there. Well and those are the only genre dedicated FM stations here.

Just because YOU don't like those genres of music doesn't mean millions of other people don't, neither does it mean the music is "tacky"

God you boomers are such a close minded bunch

In fairness, when most markets were at least 30-50% rock (70s perhaps mid 80s?), there was clearly stuff on your favorite station/s that you didn't like. I also think with the conglomerate stations today the 20 song loop makes it more frustrating. I'm sure there was a much greater of variety on every station

I quit listening to rock radio around here years ago. There is 60 years or more of what they consider classic rock recordings, tens of thousands of good songs recorded over that time, and they seemed to constantly play the same 100 songs. I always hoped they would broaden the scope and play more great, obscure songs, but it never happened.

Every day, our local classic rock station plays the same Bad Company, Bob Seger and Journey songs.. They all have their place, but they play the same songs nearly every DAY. About a week ago, while I was driving home around 2:30 p.m., they suddenly played The Easybeat's Friday On My Mind. I could hardly believe it. About a month ago, I caught the Yardbird's Shapes of Things. But yeah, now it's back to Phil Collins and Bon Jovi...

The same few songs, over and over, even across stations. Thát is what killed radio.

Or maybe it actually always was that way, and it's rather the expectations and reception of that pattern which have changed? We now got pretty much limitless acces to music. Compared to that, the same offering might look rather 'thin' as compared to a time people had just a hand full of records at their disposal.

Just a thought, don't know if it's true.

Yes, USA.

Why doesn't the Netherlands have any?

Same reason why Europe and Japan do not. Unless the radio station is private. Also, goes for Australia and New Zealand. They don't like interrupting the music. The #1 radio station for rock in the UK, is Radio Caroline (who were on a Pirate Ship and too good). They now have a MW station and sanctioned by the British Government. And you can visit the ship. The Ross Revenge. The BBC were forced to launch ILR (Independent Local Radio) because of the radio pirate ships. The USA forced this to happen.

I found a CD at a thrift a while back that was nothing but those teaser tracks. Sounded like a sales pitch thing where they were handing the CDs out and trying to get a station to change thier format or something.

They do that because the monicker "classic rock" covers everything from Bob Dylan to Metallica. Eventually they will play hard rocking guitar jams, but a lot of people like soft rock.

This repetitive crap is why I get so frustrated with streaming services, put it on shuffle and you get the same old boring over played songs when you know they have full libraries of artist to choose from.

LOL.....you must be blind and deaf!

To be fair, I think if you listed to that station for more than a few minutes (OK maybe an hour) you'd probably hear one of the songs that you mentioned. As long as it's one of a small handful of the biggest hits a particular artist has made then you'll hear it. Those stations don't play anything but the big hits. Personally, I can't think of anything more boring. I've lived though the 'classic rock era" and have heard all of that stuff numerous times. Even the songs that I consider my favorites of the bunch, I still would be happy to never hear again. I'm not sure why these classic rock stations don't mix in lesser well known tracks by these bands, but they don't seem to. it seems like they might get more people to listen for longer if they changed it up a bit... Go figure?
