Why do these speakers sound so good?

I picked up these Canadian made noresco NE531's at thrift a little while ago, but only recently gave them a decent test run. To say they sound amazing for a speaker of the very early 70's is an understatement. Why? Were these big back in the day? They are keeping up with many other more expensive rigs that cost a heck of a $8 I paid for the pair. Score? History? Opinions?

Simple 2-way with alnico Isophon drivers. I would not imagine the HF performance is great from a 4" cone mid/tweet, but the midrange is probably pretty nice eh?
 
It is amazing. Closest I have heard to horn style. But the fact that it is going through that thick shag carpet and still sounds that good is pretty amazing. Watco oil anyone?
 
I am comparing them to my Heresy II's, my main speakers. I have gone through dozens and dozens of mid-line vintage speakers and found these to be exceptional. I could rate them up with the other vintage classics like KLH and AR.
 
Could be anything from your hearing to room dynamics to system synergy coming together for you.

I have an unassuming pair of Ohm Es that I picked up for $15, the midrange of which is just stellar. The only reason they're not the mains is that I didn't have the time to build a high end and low end around them (My main set is a pair of Monitor Audio RS-6s, which are not as musical in the mids, but outperform in all other aspects).
Sometimes things just work...
 
I typically find Canadiam built speakers to be of very good quality and exceptional sound. Before "Ztag" went under they too were a very good spekaer platform. If you get the chance do listen to them as well.

Maybe its the cold weather that keeos them focused on consistantly making good products- what ever it is keep it up! I admire your efforts!

Noresco speakers were generall either Philips, Isophon or some times a good quality NEC 8 inch dual cone. They generally offered nice cabinets and quality drivers at a reasonable price.

Well, we have this very old saying here in Europe; never underestimate Isophon speaker-units!

PQR - with Isophon speakers in my Jealvox Sound Monitors (three way horn speakers like Klipsch Belle, only much bigger)

Herseys well that explains it, the upper midrange is like having your head cut off with a buzz saw, nice dynamics though!
 
Wow you guys are opinionated today. I think running them low watts in my bedroom made them sound a bit better than when they were in my living room. I am a very big collector of Canadian speakers such as PSB, Paradigm, Energy, Sound Dynamics(I just got a pair of 15s monsters for free-one bad tweeter) and so on. We lumberjacks know what to do with our lumber-make more speaker cabs!

Well, you did ask... :D

My dad owned a pair of Canadian-made "Rocelco" brand speakers in the early 80's. The drivers were Celestion and the speakers sounded spectacular.

We are fortunate that so many good brands and models originated here. I find that there is a "Canadian" sound just like there is a "British" sound and the well known "East Coast/West Coast" sound developed by our friends to the south.
 
I would love to find a pair of Camber speakers. They are also a defunct Canadian company but they made some great stuff in the Nineties, I guess.
