Why does my preamp go put-put-put-put?

I just got an ARt DJ Pre II preamp. A very distinct put-put-put-put sound is coming from the preamp, even when not playing anything. My cheapie Pyle did the same thing too which is why I got this ART model. I thought the ART model wouldn't do this. I noticed the frequency of puttering is faster with the ART than the Pyle ... and it's louder with the ART. What could be causing this? Please help!

Thanks! :)

Since this occurs with two different pre amps, I'd be looking at either the input section of your amp or the turntable circuitry. Try swapping some components to sort it out. Different turntable or different amp.

What kind of cartridge are you using? I had the same thing happen one time when I plugged a moving coil cartridge into my phono preamp and it was loaded for moving magnet.

I'm using a Shure M97x on my Pioneer PL 600. The put-put happens even if I don't have anything connected to the preamp. I can't imagine I have two bad preamps. Could it coming through the power supplies? Maybe my power is dirty?

It might be helpful to list the whole system, and the inputs you're using to connect the Pyle or ART to the amp.

Have you tried a different cable from the Art Pre to the amp?

Edit/Addition: Also, having the pre too close to a transformer can cause issues sometimes - I had some noise with an Emotiva XPS-1, and moving it away from the turntable eliminated the noise. Not sure that these inexpensive phono pre's are that well shielded.

My stereo sits below the flat screen TV which is mounted on a wall. I hoped it would be far enough away to not cause interference, but no such luck.

When the TV set is on, I get noise when I choose the phono input.

TV sets and flourescent lights can cause noise - anything like that close to your system?

Two preamps terms me it is something else. I think the input to your amp might be suspect.

What amp is it and how many input do you have? Perhaps you can try another line input?

Can you hook up a CD player to see if the input is good?

Both the TV hanging above on the wall and the Sat. TV box cause noise for me. They have to be off. The OP still hasn't answered yet where the phono pre Is plugged in. Is it plugged into a line level, tuner, aux, ect. Or did he mistakenly plug it into jacks marked "phono" if there is a phono input on his amp.

Haha! Some of you are having too much fun with this thread. ;)

My pre amp is plugged into an Onkyo TX-NR545 receiver. I am using the line level input called "PC". Today was a crazy whirly day for me so I didn't have much free time. Tomorrow I will try a different input like CD or AUX. I have used those inputs before with other devices and never had this problem. My Samsung TV is nearby and maybe it is the source of my noise. I will also try using a different cable from the preamp output to the receiver input.

Till tomorrow!! :)

On the serious side,

Just a thought because I live with interference from them sometimes, do You have a commercial radio or TV transmitter nearby, <2 miles away? Just a thought. I have one less than 1 mile from my house. Thanks goodness it is not a real powerful station.

Ok, I think this is it. Connect to AUX and try again. I think the PC input is programmable and not set to a line level input.

I doubt any of this is noise from other components but use good quality shielded cables and route them to keep signals away from power cords.

Good luck.
