Why doesn’t Sony Hi Fi gear get much Coverage or Respect?

When XM radio first came out I bought one Sony made but the cooling fan was very loud. I could easily hear it across the room so I sent it back under warranty.

Sony then sent it back to me after looking at it saying that they tested it against a couple other units and it works fine.

I threw it out and haven't bought Sony since.

I'm 69 and in the 1970's nobody I knew had Sony gear. A lot of gear was bought overseas by vets and came home with them. Most was the usual Japanese makers excluding Sony so they never came on my radar. In the 80's at the time Beta Max and VHS were fighting it out worked for a while selling audio and cameras in a box store. The mid-fi Sony stuff we sold was far from impressive. I've always liked Sony transistor radios from pocket to one speaker table radios and their TV's were the ones to have unless your the one that had to wrangle those heavy suckers into a car. I now have a pair of Sony's SS CS-5 speakers and I think they're one of the great buys in inexpensive speakers and with a load of mods documented online can be made cheaply into speakers that will rival ones 3 or 4 times their price.

Saw somewhere in this thread saying Sony invented the CD player. I believe it was Philips that then got together with Sony and they came out with Redbook standard together.

I've had a lot of really good Sony gear, and then I have also had some real crap!

Much of their vintage audio gear is very very good. I currently have a pair of SS-G7 speakers, a TC-K707ES cassette deck, and a PS-X600 turntable which I really really like! And I've had many other of their turntables and receivers, which I also quite liked. I had a TA-2000F preamp which I really regret selling. Hard to find now! Many of their better BETA machines such as the HF-900 are still working. The one I am using right now has never needed any maintenance on it. That is impressive!

But I had one of their early HTRs, and even though it was their best consumer version, it was a piece of crap! The ES designation was great until they diluted the product lines with crap. I like many of their tape decks. And they changed the world with the walkman. No doubt about it.
