Why/HOW? is Paypal mailing me?

steerpike2

Super Member
Maybe some more worldly users can enlighhten me on this please.

I received the email below today.
How does Paypal know who I am and what my email address is?
I have never visited the paypal site (i think their mode of business is suspect, so I'd never even imagine using them) I have never transacted with anyone using paypal.

In fact, the paypal domain is 100% blocked by my router, so no way I could have accessed their site.

The Xxxxx Xxxxx is my real name. How'd they get it ?

(PS, i have altered all the 'codes' in my quoted text, so no-one can "use" them from this post)

OR is this phoney email to LOOK like it comes from paypal?

They aren't e-mailing you.. it's phishing crap.. delete it and move on.. their domain might be blocked, but you can spoof an address.... good script kiddies out there that can get around a lot...

BTW.. you may want to edit that paypal address out since it could easily be a malware site and you don't want others to click that link around here..

Also, if you click on the "unsubscribe" link, you have just told them that the address is good. SOLD!!!!

Try linking to info.paypal.com. It's not real. Generic SPAM from malware.

They forwarded me a copy of the e-mail they sent you. I can offer to go as a moderater if you would like. Just send me a copy of all your banking info.

Same here. They track this stuff down, and the more copies they have, the easier it is to find the culprits.

In fact anything I get spoofing Chase, Capital One, Citi, eBay, whatever, these companies all have some way to forward phishing emails. Usually where to forward those is easily found with a Google search

I did think of that: you are all safe. I fudged up the text of the original link before quoting it here; the "link" in my OP is a nonsense URL - it goes nowhere.

But thanks to all who confirmed this isn't real.

The weird thing is, the mail doesn't actually SAY anything. It makes no offers, no request for info updates, it just basically says You've got mail.

(I'm still confused though HOW whoever-it-is matched my email address to my real name. Musta been leaked from a friend's computer's address book)

I don't know. That one might actually be legit. I get a lot of spoof phishing mail from "paypal" claiming that there is suspicious activity yada yada, please verify my password.... I also get legit mail with stupid merchandising offers that I'm not interested in, but they are legit. I think you got one of the legitimate merchandising offers. How they got your name is anyone's guess, but it does happen.

Ok, I did discover one thing by using a text editor to view my inbox file, the message DOES contain a whole pile of junk (that I'm not going to look at) in the form of xml tables and links to remotely hosted graphics.
Fortunately my mail software doesn't acknowledge any of that exists. Must be something designed for microsoft victims. All the links verify as legitimate US-based commercial/trading servers. So I'm guessing now its really just junk advertising - to be ignored.
