Why I Hate Christmas (a rant)

Not intended to offend, but I have to vent, as I've recently been accused of being a "grump who hates everything".

I hate Christmas. There. I said it.

The actual "Holy Day" aspect of it doesn't bother me. In fact, Christmas doesn't bother me in that sense any more than Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, or anything else.

What bothers me is the commercials, the shopping, the marketing. The fact that ABC is now running a "Countdown to the 25 Days of Christmas", of which I'll be overwhelmed with crappy family movies from now until sometime around or after December 25th. Christmas carols are on the radio and it's still flippin' November!

Halloween? Nope - pre-Christmas decoration shopping it would seem.
Thanksgiving? No. A day off to eat a lot of food and plan for more Christmas shopping.

When the hell did Christmas get so big that it has to be celebrated for more than a month!?!

Perhaps next year I'll start celebrating my birthday 2 months ahead.

Amen. Forced happiness, way too much commercialism, drags on far too long, tawdriness of it all, the true meaning got lost around 1965 or so, I think.

I like Christmastime myself. I have learned to ignore the commercialism so I am able to enjoy the holiday the way I want too. I like Christmas music but only play the songs that I want, when I want. I don't watch TV, so I don't see that aspect of it. I only have to shop for my wife and I do that at home on the internet, next to a beautifully lit Christmas tree and some Christmas jazz playing on the hi-fi, while drinking a hot cup of coffee (sometimes with a shot of Kahlua in it!).

Try not letting the commercialism ruin "The most wonderful time of the year"!

I happen to thoroughly enjoy the Christmas season. Yes, it's too commercialized and yes it goes on way too long. But I don't let that ruin me and my fun. Heck, there's more football on TV, there's Charlie Brown specials which are always a can't-miss, and there's fun thinking of gifts for other people. It is what you make it.

A wise old man once said

"There are two knobs on your radio (insert TV) one turns the volume down and the set off, the other changes the channel."

If you don't like what's on the tube change the tube if you can't find something you like on the other zillion channels I suggest a trip to your local mom and pop video rental store. If that don't work.

Sit in the sweet spot and turn up the tunes you most likely watch to much TV anyway.

I agree with one difference. Just go to step #3.

Happy Holidaze!

Retail stores might run commercials early and really play Christmas up for something that it does not need to be, but, who are the people who take the bait hook line and sinker?

It always amazes me how naive people are about just how much they are influenced by the media. Even very intelligent, literate people are pretty clueless when it comes to media literacy.

A RANT: Staples Business Depot recently delivered their "Christmas" flyer. The heading on page 12 was "Gifts that will win friends and influence people!". Well doesn't that just capture the true spirit of giving! I'd like to thank the brainless twat who came up with that one.

I agree, Thanksgiving is my new favorite, two days off work, no presents to buy and lots of food! :thmbsp:

i personally don't celebrate christmas at all...i'm not religious so it never had any significance in that way,i don't shop for anyone and don't expect anyone to shop for me,i never see or hear from my family all year, except when they call to bitch christmas day/night that i didn't show up at mom's house for dinner...there's really no point, and i'm actually much happier since i just said to hell with the whole concept :) i don't begrudge anyone else thier enjoyment if they actually get any from it...but there really ought to be a law against advertising/decorating before dec 1!

It's indeed an annoying fact of the society we live in.

Ignore the crap and focus on the good. That's why I love Christmas.

Cheers

.....I love the peace and contented pleasure I experience from a lighted well-decorated Christmas tree put up the day after Thanksgiving and left in place until about January 10th....Christmas has always been commercialized and that doesn't bother me at all....from said commercialism I get ideas for things to buy and give....a decorated tree and presents are not the reason for the season anyway, and to me, it's the most wonderful time of the year.....

I never had Xmas gifts as a kid. From the get-go my mom has always said things to my sister and i that the rest of "normal society" has felt to be wrong, or abusive in some kind of phycological way. Like X-mas is only for poor people. Or Santa Claus is for dumb white kids. The list of these sort of comments growing up that i would never say to a child go on and on as far as my mother's coo-coo way of thinking. sometimes i wonder why i'm such a freakn Scrooge and bah-humbug all that is our holiday season. I'm a product of my environment, and unfortunately my upbringing was done by a very odd, opinionated, compulsive clean freak that thought Xmas was a load of mass marketing nonsense. I love the hell out of my mom even though she's turned me into quite the holiday scrooge. The main thing i can't stand is the frantic glazed look in the holiday shopper's eyes. When i'm in a mall. It seems as if i am the only one manuevering side to side to avoid running right into on coming shoppers! One day i decided to screw all this crap, i'm gonna just be oblivious to everyone else and just walk straight and let everyone else move over.. I guess that theory didn't work as planned. Thats the day i gathered my own thought of Xmas. And no i never believed that Santa was for dumb poor kids or any of the other rediculous things my mom told us growing up. that day i realized that for the most part. Xmas does the exact oposite to people than what the holiday is suppose to do. It brings out the ugly, the rude become ruder. and consideration for others goes down the drain just like all that money. It's hard to see a religious holiday when its been tainted by not only my mom but the masses as well. So BAH-HuMBUG! and have a safe new year(@)(@)'s are all i want from santa.

LOL! Not to mention the brainless idiots that such advertising actually works on.

But I like Christmas; I like the tree glowing, a fire going, some nice music on and a drink with with the old lady while we snuggle up. Nice.

I heard Christmas music while standing in line at Wal-Wart weeks before Halloween. Give me a break!!!:thumbsdn:

Give yourself a break and avoid Walmart. ;) Get yourself some Frango Mints or Godiva truffles instead of that half-gallon milk carton full of Whopper malted milk balls.
