Why I hate taking a pet to the vet.

Our cat, Lucy, had a very heavy watery discharge from her eye yesterday, so this morning I took her to the vet to have a looksee. She hasn't been there in 2 1/2 to 3 years. Pretty happy, healthy cat.

Turns out she indeed had a minor scratch on her cornea, which should be fine.
She also has a "really bad" heart murmur, and she's 2 pounds under weight. Two pounds??? Vet said as furry as she is, it would be hard to see the weight loss, but her ribs were probably visible! Lucy hates to be picked up, and let's you know it. We almost never pick her up. Probably why no one noticed the loss. She eats and drinks as she always has, hunts outside as always, and loves to sleep at the foot of my wife's bed. Don't know what they're going to find, but I hate not coming home with a pet that I took to the vet. Last time I took a cat to the vet, and she had to stay, I never saw her again.

I'm going to get a call later today and might have to make one of "those" decisions...again. Send some karma please.

Hate to hear that Kevin.. I'd be lost without my cat... Hopefully they will get her back to health and you'll be back with her soon.

Lucy, and her arch nemesis, Zoey.

if the cat is happy and not in serious pain, don't let some 'vet' take over your life(or the cat's) with pronouncements of doom-some people have heart murmurs all their lives. see if there is anything the cat likes to eat and then provide it. if there is something affordable which will help things, then ok, but i've come to wonder what's up with too many of the 'vets' i see nowadays(one here wanted $4500 to put a rod in my buddy's little dog's fractured leg. after that pitch was rejected, the dog got a slide on cast which he limped around on[very rapidly, i might add] for two weeks and then tore off as he chased my buddy's grandson around the yard. everything seems cool and the 4500 is still safely at home). your description of Lucy's life sounds like she's happy; hope it continues that way.

I gotta agree with a lot of the above.
Every time we take our dogs in they try to sell us a $1000 teeth cleaning for Emmy and go on about how the tartar buildup can lead to serious infections, blah, blah, blah....

It ain't happening, Doc...

Our cat Itkis has a heart murmer, he has had it since he was a year old. He is now 14.

Lucy is beautiful. Hope she is back to her peppy self. I love my felines, at home and my transmitter site cats. The Siamese always land the mice!

Hope it works out for Lucy & you. Pets are special for sure. My dog thinks I'm great. Goos thing she doesn't understand too many words. :)

My Yorkie had a heart murmur for a long time. Watched it for awhile, then went on some inexpensive medication. Hope Lucy turns out OK - please keep us updated.

Update on Lucy

Just got back home with Lucy, and she'll be with us for awhile still. Full body x-rays revealed several problems though. She has an enlarged heart, mso much so that it's pushing on her trachea, making swallowing and breathing sometimes labored. She also has 3 kidney stones. The vet had never seen 3 in one animal before. One kidney is half as big as it should be, with each kidney having a stone in it. The last stone is in the tube between her good kidney and the bladder.

Oh, she's also constipated.:sigh: Apparently, since she's a Manx breed (no tail) her large intestine doesn't operate as it should. Something about there being a lack of vertebrae down there to help with movements. Makes sense in a gross sort of way.

Anyway, the results of 25 blood test should be back tomorrow, and a course of action will be planned. The eye should be OK in about 5 days, and medication likely will take care of kidney stones. The heart is another matter. If it's due to a thyroid issue, drugs might shrink it. It's always going to be enlarged though, and the vet explained about this condition causing the heart to "throw a clot". Could happen at any time, with sudden death, or a painful one. Not great news, but Lucy is sitting next to me purring as I type.

Financially, at this point we're out $660, but for 8 years she's brought so much happiness and laughter to us, our kids, and the grandkids. I can always get on a payment plan within reason I guess, as long as she's having a quality life.

Thanks for all the kind words and reassurance.:thmbsp:

She's gorgeous Kevin, good that she's home and happy. You've obviously done what you can and the rest will take care of itself, that's life. I can appreciate how you feel though, I'd be lost without the pooper.
