Why not just get bookshelf speakers if even the big ones need subwoofers?

Is that what I did? It appears to me I simply asked a question.

I thought your telling me what I need is implied by your question in response to my saying I don't need subs and that you implied that not needing subs is caused by ignorance of their benefits. If I inferred too much my apologies.

Now. I know there can be benefits to distributed bass. I might use distributed bass once I get settled. But I don't need it, I've done fine without it for 45 years. A more important problem I'm gonna have in my new place is my inability to use horn loaded or electrostatic speakers. And if the chinless mini monitors I'll be using don't cut it on their own I will need subwoofing.

Regards

The opening thread stated many assumptions that were probably a bit off causing the thread to seemingly go the route it's taking.

Is bass often effected by original recording quality ??? Sometimes I hear good tight bass on a recording and other recordings seem to be muddy or boomy on the same system.
I have found that if you just bring in a small amount of subwoofer bass music seems to sound better than no sub at all. I find this to be true on most of my systems. Of course I may just be imagining this!!! :D

Lots of arguing about bass these last few days... Almost as if people were obsessed with it...

This is sounding a lot like 'Econowave'.
Last year, almost all speaker threads of someone getting/scoring a new speaker had someone coming in and suggesting 'Econowave'.
Now it seems that has changed to distributed bass.

Let's try to keep the threads clean instead of everything jumbled up everywhere.

So to recap, this below is what I wanted to see if there is worth cleaning out huge speakers in favor of a smaller bookshelves on stand or mounted.
Bookshelves that can go down to 60hz or below but cross over set at 60hz with a sub that handles anything below 60hz.
vs.
Towers that use similar drivers that can go down to 35hz or below but cross over set at 60hz with a sub that handles anything below 60hz.

For the next trick kids, bentpencil will tell us how tomlinmgt likes his steak cooked.

Medium rare.

If I used my infinity infintesimals IV and my sub (paradigm something something, big passive, 10" active) I'd be missing out on some midbass because to my ears, subs don't do mid-bass well. In all other respects, up until I reach the point where they start to break up, (much louder then I listen 99.9%) to my ears, the infentesimals sound identical (minus bass) to my crescendos. That's probably due to the fact that both speakers use Identical EMIT tweeters, and the midbass driver on the infentesimals is very similar to the mid-tweet driver on my crescendos. (so similar, that I do wonder if they are identical units, one day I'll pull them and check the codes)

However, the infintesimals are less sensitive then the crescendos, and start to exhibit overdriven distortion sounds at lower db then the crescendos. They are both from the same era of infinity speakers, I do believe they were manufactured the same year.

If I had to, I'm sure I could live happy using just the infinitesimals and the sub. They certainly take up a hell of a lot less space then the Crescendos.

p.s. distributed bass, i.e. multiple subwoofers is something I plan on experimenting with some day, no doubt. in my current living situation, it isn't feasible.
does that help?

I'd be in total agreement if it weren't for those incredible little 4" Phillips mid-bass couplers in my QLS-1's.....which I think are used in the Dahlquist DQ-10 as well. The little bastard simply kicks ass from 200-600 HZ. In a head to head comparison with my Altec 19's, which have a 15" driver covering that region, I never once felt like the Altecs had any advantage over the infinities wrt mid-bass reproduction.

Sweet! I believe it; seems like nothing is never a hard and fast rule.

Well, 200Hz rolloff is around where you start to be able to get really freaking loud with the right small driver, but 200Hz rolloff means you're going to need a woofer, not a subwoofer.
