Why put your gear on the floor?

I would think pet hair, dust, crawly insects, drunken friends, children and just a waste of space outweigh the benefits. If the sound stage is an issue put your gear in a rack off to the side.

Then you're back to having long speaker cables, impacting sound quality.

Since JohnVF has given a good recap of a previous incarnation of this thread, I'll emmulate virtually all other threads on AK and pick a random unrelated comment and run with it:

Doesn't bending over and having the blood rush to your head while changing vinyl present a problem?

If the act of putting your head lower than your knees presents a problem with blood rushing to your head, then I suggest you may have health/circulation issues you may want to address. Pills and chemicals are not the answer here, go with exercise. And, sooner rather than later. A good target to shoot for is to be able to stand on your head for 30 seconds without a hint of the feeling that your eyes will explode.

When i see Audio Porn shots with the gear on the carpet like that i scratch my head too. (!?!)
All my stuff is up off the floor/easy access. Given a choice, i would rather higher than lower.

Mine too.

Ohighway makes a good point about water leak damage. I'd just like to point out that it doesn't have to be in the basement to occur. I have had water damage several times that didn't involve a basement.

1st time was from an aquarium leak. Fortunately no euipment was hurt because it was in a different room, however, the water soaked through the carpet to my albums that were on the floor against the wall.

2nd time a hot water heater malfunctioned and rained water from ceiling above. Lost speakers and VCR. Albums were soaked again. The entertainment cabinet saved everything else.

3rd time was a toilet leak. Warped speaker cabinets.

I now try to keep everything at least an inch off the floor including speakers. This saved me from a waterbed leak.

I just don't get it. Seems like some kinda trendy thing with audiophiles setting their amps and preamps, even turntables, on the floor between the speakers :scratch2::scratch2::scratch2:

Okay, speakers on the floor, no problem. Putting a turntable down on carpet? Why would you ever do that? Doesn't bending over and having the blood rush to your head while changing vinyl present a problem? And carpet fibers all over the lp.

And air circulation beneath the gear? What's the secret of that?

As you can see I like my schtuff in a rack with the turntable and cd player at a convenient level. Maybe the floor-level listeners prefer the prone position? It's so difficult to change records propped up on your elbows. Or is it for the exercise? Like doing deep knee bends or pushups to adjust the volume, or a sit-up to get to the record cabinet?

I just gotta scratch my head....:D

Probably because folks do what is convenient for them, not you.

I don't have it on the floor, I have it on a board that is raised an inch off the ground.

Why? There wasn't any space elsewhere. Damn TVs... :p

Well done! I have used that placement before as well.

Of course everyone is right. There is no 'one way' to use your gear. No dumb question intended. I was just curious for a reasonable explanation. I would be the last person to tell someone how to set up their system. And the answers have been great!

Perhaps this question was brought up a year ago as johnvf stated. It's been a long time since I've posted much on AK so I probably missed that.

The only thing that I put on the floor are power-amps. Why? Because they are generally large and heavy and it makes them easier to swap in and out.

Both of my listening systems are "work-like" in layout: one in the studio and one in the home office. I have a line source, attenuator and power amps. I like to have the attenuator right where I can reach it and I hide the power amps down on the floor, out of sight and out of harm's way, but placed on a piece of wood to ensure adequate ventilation.

There's really no other appropriate place in either system and I certainly don't want the power amps up off the floor and in the way, taking up useful space.

Cheers,

Otto

In another thread it was noted that I had my poweramps on the floor which I really doesn´t have they are standing on some woodpanels.

The reasons my Accuphase is like 120 pounds my Denon 70. I live in a one room apartment in combination with my stereo is a total of 10 components + speakers + subwoofers so I have no other place for them right now.

I have mine on the floor because I don't have anything to put it on. I just plop my old butt on the floor and get things going. Once things are set I move up to front and center. Some day I will find what I want to put things on but for some reason I am in no hurry.

I think you may have a hard time finding suitable shelving unit for these puppies:

Beasts!

I doubt IKEA shelving units can cut the mustard.

:D:D:D

What do you think?

Interesting what people see in system layouts. Since my ARC LS15 preamp has dual balanced outputs, and both my crossovers have balanced inputs, my rack will be moving to the inside side wall this summer with just the crossovers and amps between the speakers. They will be on the floor, but elevated to eliminate the water damage issue. This move along with bass traps is simply to improve the sound stage of the main rig, as I'm sure most arrangements like this are. would I do this because it looks cool or whatever no, but to improve my sound stage? You betcha!
Regards,
Jim

Let's see. I just scrupulously cleaned this LP on my VPI cleaner and now I'm going over there to plop it on my VPI turntable which is located in the dirtiest spot in the room - the floor. Yeah, that's a good idea. And I'm not going to leave the cover on the table either because that would cause unwanted resonances.

But I'm going to make sure I put the record back into its dust free sleeve when I'm done because I don't want it to get all Rice Krispy like.

:D

Why all this talk about gear on the floor? I'm still trying to figure out why so many place speakers on the floor when they are clearly designed for some sort of stand placement.

FWIW: My power amps, electronic crossover and parametric equalizer are on floor stands. They are directly behind my mains (tube mono blocks), adjacent to my sub woofers (bridged Crowns) or on a low stand placed front and center (crossover and parametric equalizer). The rest of my gear is on a dual Flexy (TNT Audio) to the right of my chair. Yes, that means plenty of long ICs and short speaker cables.

Why the floor? With the really big, heavy stuff, to prevent potential energy from turning into kinetic energy. ;)
