Wierdo speakers: MA Electrostatics

Ever hear of these? Rather conventional looking cabinets but the grille is a very odd beveled shaped. Opened them up and found out why. The shape is so the grille clears a strange array of tweeters, with a bracket that holds three or four of them pointed in all directions... like I said, wierd. These were on sale at a local thrift, are these any good?

Thanks!

Are you sure they're electrostatics? Sound a lot like a pair of Micro Acoustics FRM-1s.

That's them! Any good?
Don't know, never heard them. However, Paulfxl and Hillman both have a set, iirc. Might be worth seeing what they have to say about the MAs.

Gracias, Chari. Might be worth getting them for my newly acquired Wintec R1120... what a strange/rare system that would make, good for starting conversations if nothing else.

Sounds like a great plan, but then again, I'm into audio oddities. Just be forewarned, don't let the others around here know that those MAs have a tweeter array like that ... they'll hound you about it. Just speaking from experience gained from my DA D-12s (9 tweeters in all directions) and my D-6s (5 tweeters in all directions).

Be sure to post pics if you do get them and get that setup together.

I had a pair in the early 80's. They were pretty good - very good for the time. The tweeter array was obviously an attempt to get better dispersion from cone tweeters.

I've got a pair of Ma's. Still trying to eliminate the buzz from one of the five tweeters on one side. I would say if the price is right (I paid $40/pair) overall condition (surrounds are not foam so they should be good) and you are interested in unique designs, maybe these are a good choice. Not too many Ma's out there to begin with and that number is always shrinking. Visit the Roger Russell site for more info as mentioned in the earlier e-mails you got.

Seems to me if you were going to build speakers like this you would al least take the time to mount the tweet brackets so they were mirror imaged. Duh.

Its not the array that bothers me. Its the crappy paper cone tweeters. I never liked paper tweeters....ever.
