Will Klipschorns fit in my room?

Loosen the speaker wire terminals and wiggle the connectors as you slowly and firmly re-tighten the screws. This will help cut through any corrosion that might have developed over the decades. Your Klipschorns look good and fit your room just right!

To this day I remember around 1974 the salesman at the first Spearkerlab store taking me to his house a block away from their store (a converted large house) and playing Cisco Kid through a phase linear 700 and a pair of their Khorns. The band was in the room...

If you have room for those suckers, you are in for a treat.
That's funny. The first time I heard K-Horns at a dealer, they used War's 'Low Rider' as a demo track. It definitely got everyone's attention in the store.

Resist all temptation to be swapping parts or drivers in these until after you have 90-days of listening to them as is ...
What happens after 90 days? The sooner SMAHL’s are installed the sooner you hear what these speakers are capable of. Other than that, sure wait 90 days.

I noticed in your picture that your crossovers have their original large can capacitors. At over forty years old I would swap them for a new set of capacitors ( much smaller) and sit back and enjoy the music!

Grew up on K-Horns... wish I had the room, pops tells me to take his everytime I am home.

Good room for them.

I have Dayton caps on order and will install them on Saturday. When I pull the networks out I’ll scrub all the spade connectors with a wire brush to eliminate corrosion. I know we could debate caps all day long but I was pleased with the Daytons in my Cornwalls and the price is fair.

This should be the next addition to your property. Plenty of space for your dad's K-Horns.

May do something one day. One of my uncles built a separate building for his "listening" rooms and party room (which sound more impressive then it is). It is no **** bigger than their house. He has a room for all his TOTL old crap receivers and his serious listening room, both off the "great room" that has a bar and pool table.

Most want a media room. He has a media house.

Got the capacitors in from Parts Express today. Pulled the networks out and found that, as expected, the old motor run caps were shot and leaking oil everywhere. The oil ate right through the black paint on the board. What a mess.

I got them out of there and did my best to clean up before installing the new Daytons. I paralleled a 6.2 and a 6.8 to get the odd value of 13uF. Everything measured right and I installed the boards back.

The improvement was not subtle. I had been stumped as to why the Khorns sounded so much shoutier and edgier than the Cornwalls even though they used the same squawker and tweeter. The new caps smoothed everything out nicely and tamed a lot of the shrillness, and also helped a lot with imaging. I’m really loving these speakers now.

So I screwed off the K77 drivers to have a look at the gaskets. They were rock hard but still in tact, so I figured I'd replace them. I had some of this foamy rubber sheet material sitting around from some long-ago kid project, so I cut some new ones.

I noticed that the hole on the stock gasket was smaller than the opening on the driver, so I cut the opening a little larger. When I put them back together I noticed that the throat diameter of the horn was matched to the gasket and not driver, hence the small opening. I'll probably go to the auto parts store today to get some gasket material and remake them to the original dimensions.

I also had the chance to do some REW testing. Here are the frequency responses of the Right (red) and Left (green) Khorn compared to a Cornwall (blue). All tested at 92db @ 1kHz @ 1m.

SPL frequency Khorn vs Cornwall.jpg

Overall you can see that the Khorns are much smoother from top to bottom. They don't have the exaggerated bass of the Cornwalls. Comparing total harmonic distortion:
THD Khorn vs Cornwall.jpg

As expected, the Khorns have quite a bit less distortion than the Cornwall. Everywhere except for the trebles, where the Khorns have a nasty spike in distortion from 5-8kHz. Looking at the different distortion components from a single Khorn sweep:

Red is noise floor. Blue is 2nd harmonic distortion and yellow is 3rd harmonic distortion. I think that jump in 3rd harmonic distortion above 5kHz explains the hard/shrill tone I'm hearing. Looks like I do need a set of Dave's SMAHL's. Going to order today.
