Will Yamaha replace both the CD-S2100 and CD-S3000 after dropping them?

As a retiree, I’m putting together my final two-channel system and I was looking at Yamaha‘s site for the U.S. market, and it looks like they’ve dropped both the CD-S2100 and CD-S3000 from their line-up. I was going to buy the CD-S2100, as a Christmas gift to myself this year, to go with my R-N2000 receiver, but now in a holding pattern.

i know that the CD-S2100 had mixed reviews and that it’s been on the market for over eight years now, but I am wondering if anybody might have heard anything about a new replacements or updates for these two higher end CD players? At this point in my life, I prefer to “buy once and cry once” and move on. I currently have both the CD-C600 and the CD-S700 that I purchased back in 2013, but want to upgrade for the last time since I still have far more CDs than vinyl LPs.

Honestly, I wish they would bring back something like their older CD-S1000 in SILVER with the piano gloss black side panels, in the less than $2Ks range.

I am just sticking with the CD-S2000. It sounded good to start with and sounds fantastic after replacing all of the op-amps in the analog section. It may be "only" 24 bit but I don't begin to care about that, it is now the best sounding CDP that I have ever heard.

I like it enough that I bought one extra complete laser+motor assembly and 2 extra OEM lasers to future proof it.

As to any new products, sorry, I haven't heard anything there.

It's hard to guess if Yamaha has given up on their higher end SACD/CD players or not. Crutchfield still has some black scratch and dent CD-S3000 left at a big discount. Is it Yamaha or bust for you?

Thanks for the replies… Unfortunately, it is a Yamaha or bust situation for me.

I guess I’ll wait a few months to see what happens since I was hoping for an upper level Yamaha CD play, in sliver. Well, once I pay down some of my Christmas shopping charges, I’ll move onto a new Technics SL-1200GR2 turntable… Never been a fan of Yamaha turntables, especially after 1985/1986… There mid 1970s to early 1980s is a totally different story, but I’m sticking to new units for this system.

The Technics is a fine turntable. Not that it matters, but if I was in the market for a higher end CD player, I'd have this on the top of my list. And it comes in Champagne color.

Can't say concerning the CD-S2100 but the CD-S2000 and contemporary Marantz used a Pioneer laser and SACD/digital processing board.
 
I have a CD-S2100. It is in the shop for diagnostics. It drops out while streaming. I think it may be something to do with the USB.
If they can't repair it, I'm looking at the Musical Fidelity M6SCD, or maybe the comparable Technics unit. I need both USB in and XLR outs. My $$ limit is 3K-ish.
Hopefully they can fix it. It's only 6 years old.
My previous CDP was also a higher end Yamaha, but it lasted 30 years.
 
Yeah, I’m still in a holding pattern on the possibility of Yamaha releasing a CD-2x00 in the Summer of 2025. Their CD-C600 disappeared for a bit, but came back as the CD-C603. I still have my close to 12 years old CD-S700 and CD-C600, both in silver, but looking for something that will last the next 10-15 years And built like a tank.

If Yamaha doesn’t release a higher end CD player, I’ll probably go with one of the silver Marantz models.
 
I should be going to the AXPONA show here in Chicago in a few weeks and was planning on dropping by the Yamaha room anyway. I'll talk to the reps and see if there is any info on new CD players coming out, or if they are, they may even be on display. I can tell you that from last year's show, of the rooms I visited, there weren't many CD players used as sources for most brands. It was mostly digital streamers (by far) and vinyl a distant second. Open reel tape and CD/SACD/DVD had very little presence.

Right now, checking Yamaha's website, they only list the CD-C603 and CD-S303. We'll see if something newer is coming down the pipeline!

Seems like with the demise of cd in general, we'll be finding less selection with players going forward.
On a positive note, my 2019 CD-S2100 checked out fine...whew! Turns out the streaming dropouts I've been suffering thru are a result of my new Dell Inspirin laptop not liking the Steinberg driver. Seems the Dell motherboard architecture is not very compatible with it. I was going nuts trying to figure out the root cause. I just said WTH and today I bought a new Asus ROG laptop. I've got new Volti Lucera speakers coming next week, l. Now I'm ready!
 
A friend had the CD-S1000 and I was sold on the sound.

In 2023 I sought the CD-S3000, but learned it was no longer available in my market. I tried to order the CD-S2100 in silver. Same problem, none were available.

There was a known disc reading peculiarity that manifested in some, but not all, of these newer units as they warmed up, and Yamaha released a firmware fix. It was available to approved service centres, but not the general public.
 
@saratoga Not everyone has an internet connection at all times to stream with. Like a lot of our military. Yes, they have internet available most of the time, but not that they can hook up their devices to. Besides, I'd rather own the content I paid for, rather than license it and be subject to their conditions, ads, usage rights, etc. Off the grid has its appeal.
 
Bergun - I have had a CD-S2100 for about a year now and also have an older CD-S300. Both perform flawlessly and sound amazing. I appreciate and understand your loyalty to Yamaha. Good luck and enjoy retirement with at least one music break a day.
 
I just got back from AXPONA and I talked to one of the Yamaha reps about their high end CD players. He told me the CD-S3000 is still available but the high end CD player/SACD market is a very small one and they have not sold a lot of those players, especially in the USA. He said Japan has a larger market for those. He told me off the record, and that he wasn't allowed to say anything anyway, but there might be something coming down the pike maybe towards the end of 2026. But he also said that the suppliers of optical pickups are dwindling, and nearly gone. In fact, I was watching Paul McGowan of PS Audio talking about their brand new transport machine yesterday, and one of the questions he got about it was who is supplying the optical pickups? The answer is Marantz. But then he also said Marantz just stopped making them, so they bought every one they had, which was only about 300. And when those are gone, he said they didn't know if there would be any other suppliers. So a big question mark.

This makes me very happy that I bought 2 new optical pickups for my CD-S2000 while I could.
