William H. Scheide, Founder of the Bach Aria Group, Has Passed
The great William H. Scheide, philanthropist, and founder/director of the Bach Aria group, which enjoyed international acclaim for its concerts, broadcasts, and recordings, has died. He was 100 years old.
A graduate of the Princeton class of 1936, he received his masters from Columbia, writing his thesis on what happened to Bach's music during the first century after his death. Scheide was drawn to Bach's cantatas, and feeling they represented some his finest work and were unjustly neglected, formed the Bach Aria Group in 1946 and remained its director until 1980. The ensemble included such great singers as Eileen Farrell, Jan Peerce, and Norman Farrow, as well as instrumentalists such as Robert Bloom, Yehudi Wyner, and Paul Ulanowsky, amongst many others.
