Any one take his 90th Birthday Party? There's another thread on WN. So, combo this if it makes sense. Just found this out.

For the most most part, very enjoyable.

The well known sang his tunes from the past. Even Willie took part. Really enjoyed his take with George Strait as they sang Poncho Villa's ballad.

Willie's getting pretty long-in-the-tooth, but still remembers the lyrics and can still strum that old guitar of his.

Several in the crowd on stage; I wondered about. ? But, it was his party, so he invited some strange strangers.

Was great to reminisce... listening to his country-tunes of old.


If you missed it, you missed a good time. Even Keith Richards made it; one of the "strangers"!

I saw this Live Concert on Qobuz over the weekend - played a few tracks - what I heard sounded real good!

My wife and I watched it but had to bail after listening to some of the 'posers' butcher his tunes.

I hear you on the "butchering". Some strayed from the country/western roots, putting their own "stamp" on his music.

And still wondering why Ethan Hawk in his tangerine outfit and Versace cowboy hat was chosen to introduce some of the songsters. For me, just seemed out of place. Just my POV.

We watched it. Had its moments, although I too was a little stumped by some of the incongruous celebrities pressed into service as presenters.

Most impressive to me was that Willie can still play a lick or two, even though I'm sure his hands are pretty loaded up with arthritis by now.
 
Right.The Party was April 29th & 30th, 2023. So it took 6 month or so for the CDs/DVDs/BluRays
to get through the pipeline for the Dec 15th release!

I'm still working out the Jones/Dog. even Richards connection. If someone can chime in on this, I can go to my grave with a smile, eh? :biggrin:

I like a lot of his earlier work, of course, but I'm a huge fan his 1998 album Teatro, and produced by Daniel Lanois. Filmmaker Wim Wenders produced a documentary feature-length film about the production of the album, but with a few exceptions, I find it just a very charming record.
 
Well, he seemed to be pretty "limber" in the way he walked across the stage.

How old is that guitar-playing Vintage?

On another note (pun unintended), I did a look-see what catapulted him into the upper songsters of his genre, and I figure it was his song writing.

Coming up with "Crazy", and "...Blue Eyes" ballads, people starting taking note of him... and this was in the middle 70's.

Was an interesting read how ended up in a country-western #1 "Pole Position".


The rest was history.

Just read where his new 4-part documentary is available starting today on Paramount +.
 
Watched his birthday party last night.

In my opinion, the best performance was by Willie's son, Lukas.
His rendition of "Angel Flying Too Close to The Ground" was flawless and very moving.
He obviously inherited his father's voice and guitar playing ability.

Really enjoyed the other artists' interpretations of Willie's songs with the exception of Dave Matthews.

And then there's Willie-amazing what he can still do at 90.
