Anybody else installed this yet or am I the only one? I decided to try it for the hell of it. I'm running XP Pro and SP3 has only been installed for about an hour as of now but it seems to be quicker. How much quicker I'm not really sure, it just feels a little snappier. It's not supposed to go public until the 29th but sites Major Geeks and Softpedia have it for download.
Supposedly, speed increased in some instances by upwards on 10% over SP2. This was for Microsoft Office, but across the board improvements have been reported.
Personally, I'll wait for the official release through Microsoft Update. I'm in no hurry, frankly, and it's not a particularly exciting release. Four new "features" that 99% of people will never even notice, an aggregation of all updates since SP1, and all the hotfixes since SP2. *blows party favor*
Much more exciting (to me, at least) is the impending release of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, which is supposed to occur...RIGHT NOW. April 24th, and it's past midnight where I am. W00t!
I tried it Monday on my machine and it said the install was successful.
However, on the necessary restart, the computer just went into an endless reboot loop. Several dirty tricks, and several hours later with no success, I resorted to reformatting the HDD and a complete clean install.
Dunno why...but it clearly didn't go well for me.
Coulda been my system, I did have to reload the machine from a backup image a while back when I changed from a Raid 0 striped disk array to a Raid 1 mirrored disk array. It's possible that somehow because of those differences combined with the reimaging process, my system was too odd for the installer to cope with.
Dunno if I got the balls to try it again because I don't like the thought of maybe another clean install and reload. I kind of like the way is running right now.
Incidentally, right after a clean install is probably the best time to install service packs and such because, let's face it, before you put back all your programs and data you've got nothing to lose. Plus, anything that was done to the system after the clean install could have possibly contributed to the problem. Starting from a clean slate gives you the best chance for success. :yes:
Come to think of it, I had to do a clean install of Vista the other day to get it to update to SP1. I haven't given in to the MS bashers quite yet (part time Linux user though I am), but I'm starting to wonder if they might not be right about this whole "Vista is a lemon" thing.

The last time I tried Vista Ultimate, I used SP1, & it kinda helped it, but that OS just isn't for me, at least until they FIX it to run as quick as XP, lol. :thumbsdn:
